I might have just sent a draft of Wardens of Ivalice Part 2 out to beta. Maybe I will actually finish this thing.

Big news!

So now it can be told: after many years of being a semi-regular contributor and helper behind the scenes, I have officially joined the team at [community profile] ladybusiness as a contributing editor!

Here's the official announcement.

I am really excited about this -- as I've mentioned often, I've long wanted to get back into writing more meta and criticism, and [community profile] ladybusiness is the perfect venue for me to do so. It's a commitment and a larger audience, both of which I find inspiring, but not such a huge commitment or audience that I expect it to be daunting.

Of course, I will continue to keep posting here, too -- personal stuff, fanfiction, politics and other non-fandom content, quick thoughts that don't make for a full essay, etc. And I'll link everything I post there, but if you like the posts I write on fandom and feminism, and you don't follow [community profile] ladybusiness already, I definitely recommend you check it out.

Many many thanks to [personal profile] renay and [personal profile] bookgazing, along with the rest of the team, for allowing me to join them! :D I look forward to working with you all.

There are many great things about living in San Francisco, and one of them is that the big Broadway shows often launch their touring productions here. I haven't often been able to take advantage of this fact, because said big show launches almost always sell out quickly, mostly to season ticket holders. Usually, I end up catching a show on its second or third time through (that's how I saw Wicked, The Book of Mormon, and Avenue Q), and usually I'm fine with that.

I bet some of you can guess where this is going.

So the local Broadway series recently put season tickets for the 2016-17 season on sale, for six shows, two of which were announced. The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime was one. And the other? Is Hamilton.

I have never even thought about buying season tickets for this series before, but I immediately started considering whether it was worth shelling out for it this time. Soon, I discovered that a number of my friends were having similar thoughts, and a couple of days ago, we went for it. So I am now the proud holder of a season pass for the upcoming season, and I will be seeing Hamilton in the Spring of 2017!

I like going to the theater, so there's a good chance that I'll be happy to see whatever the other shows are. (Dare I hope for Fun Home to go on tour next year, too? Now that would be an embarrassment of riches.) And although I don't have strong feelings about Curious Incident -- I have yet to read the book -- it reviews well, so I'm sure I'll go see it. But it's all worth it, just for Hamilton. Sure, it's over a year away. But I'm still really excited. Yay Hamilton!

I got my shipping notice for DA:I last night, and it put a huge grin on my face. I probably won't actually get to start playing until tomorrow, since I have a dress rehearsal and won't get home until too late. Unless I can convince T that we'll have time to at least play the opening cutscene. Maybe character creation. A little bit of gameplay?

This is going to be a slippery slope, isn't it, leading to the spot at the bottom where we look up and it's 3am on a worknight.

As long as I'm here, a reminder that I have to imagine ought to go without saying, but then again there are some new folks about (hi, new folks!!), so here goes: please, please, for the sake of me and for other folks reading this journal, please no spoilers for DA:I in comments. I will be very clear how far I am into the game when I post about it; feel free to post information up to that point, but no further. Thank you, so much.

I suppose it would be more accurate to say "hitting the air", since most of my travel will be by plane, but that doesn't have the same ring to it. ;) Anyway, it took a bit of wrangling to get all these ducks in their row, but on Thursday morning (early, so so early), I'll be leaving for a week-and-a-half three-city epic trip:

  1. Thursday: Fly SFO to Boston, at 6:45 in the morning. :\ Why, god, why? (Answer: because it was this or the red-eye, and I'll get more sleep this way. But still. Guh.)

  2. Friday: Road trip to Bryn Mawr with A!

  3. Friday-Sunday: 1990s decade reunion at BMC. This is the first time I've ever gone to Reunion in an "off-year", and I'm looking forward to what I hope will be a less structured visit -- there's a few events for the '90s cluster, but it should mostly be just hanging out and chatting and relaxing at the Mawr. Anyone reading this planning to be there?

  4. Sunday: Road trip back to Boston.

  5. Monday-Thursday: Hanging in Boston. This is where I expect to have the most free time. If anyone is in the area and wants to hook up for coffee or whatever, let me know!

  6. Friday: Fly Boston to Chicago (once again stupidly early in the morning).

  7. Saturday: [personal profile] lassarina's wedding!! :D I am very excited to finally meet her face to face (although I have no expectations of quality time, given that it is a wedding). I hope to get some time to hang with [personal profile] seventhe and meet other folks, too.

  8. Sunday: Meet up with Tumblr people, details pending. I should probably get on that.

  9. Monday: Fly home in the early afternoon (one reasonable flight time, yes!).

Sounds suitably epic, right? :) I can't believe it's only a couple of days away.

Peggy Carter TV series Peggy Carter TV series!!!!!

I am so excited about this you have no idea. Ever since word came down that a pilot script existed and that Hayley Atwell's option with Marvel had been extended, I have had my fingers crossed, waiting and hoping for this news. And now it is real. It is really actually happening. And it's been ordered direct to series so there's no question of whether it will be picked up. I AM SO EXCITED OMG.

Slightly more coherent thoughts on my Tumblr, here.

T and I are going to Dubai in the third week of March! To visit my friend M, who's been teaching there for a couple of years, and also to see the mega-architecture and experience a very different kind of place. We've been trying to get this together for awhile, so to suddenly have it happening at almost the last minute is a bit daunting, but I'm more excited than not.

Any suggestions for surviving a sixteen hour plane flight, possibly in sub-optimal seats, are very welcome.

That's right: it's happening again!

Based on the Kiss Battle that has run in the Final Fantasy fandom for the last few years (credit to [personal profile] seventhe for the most recent variation on the rules), this is just a fun way to celebrate February with lots of fun kissing fanworks. Any kind of kiss is welcome -- het, slash, femslash; shippy, familial, gen; cheek kisses, mouth kisses, kissing of... other things; serious, fluffy, silly, or all three at once; fanfic, fanart, whatever you come up with; anything goes!

The official post is now open!

OpenID and anonymous commenting are on, so you don't need a Dreamwidth account to participate. If you're curious to see how the game works, here are links to the kiss battles from 2012 and 2013.

"Republic of Thieves" comes out TODAY.

Why did I think it was next week?

Why I am I not on my way to the bookstore right now??
owlmoose: (kh - roxas)
I don't usually pay much attention to E3 or other events like it -- I figure I'll get my information from the write-ups after the fact. But we were promised information about Dragon Age 3, so I've been keeping an eye on the date, and then my Tumblr dashboard exploded in liveblogs and commentary for the various press conferences, so I ended up following along for most of the day (except for an hour in the afternoon when the construction noise from next door got to be too much to deal with, and then early evening when our power went out). Naturally, with that much data, I came up with some thoughts and impressions, almost all of it making me very happy.

1. First, of course, the DA3 trailer, which has grabbed me completely:

Fall 2014! This is a little disappointing, but on the other hand I would really rather they take their time and make a solid game -- I enjoyed DA2 a lot, but it was clearly rushed, and I wish I had been able to play the game the developers intended. I'm glad they don't seem to be making that mistake here. Also, it will be available for both current and next gen consoles, which I know is good news for a lot of people (although I'm highly likely to buy a PS4 -- see below).

Thoughts and speculation are spoilery for trailer )

2. Also good news: there continues to be absolutely nothing of interest to me that's exclusive to the Xbox, thereby validating my choice not to get one. :P

3. Sony announces that the PS4 will support used games and not require always-on high-speed Internet for single-player games. This is probably the single best announcement out of the entire show: Sony will not be playing along with Microsoft's attempt to destroy the used game market and price lower-income gamers out of their content. As I speculated on Tumblr, I have to wonder whether Sony was originally going to go down that road, then backed off when they saw the uproar that MS provoked over the Xbox One. But it doesn't really matter -- they aren't doing it, and given how much they poked MS in their presser, it seems pretty clear that they aren't going to. Score one for consumers. Does this mean that the console wars as we know them are drawing to a close? Only time will tell. But regardless, I know which company is getting my money.

4. Final Fantasy XV! Which is actually a rebranding of the long (long, long) anticipated FF Versus XIII, a fine decision on Square Enix's part. There's a new trailer, which is very pretty if a little heavy on the dudes. But I'm willing to cut Square a bit of slack in this, at least in the Final Fantasy series, as long as they have good female characters in the game. No release date, but still, more movement on this game than I've seen in a long time.

5. Last but not least: Kingdom Hearts 3. I didn't know how much I wanted this until I saw the teaser trailer, but now I'm a bundle of squee. No release date on this either, of course. I'm going to guess sometime next year, which would suggest that 2014 is going to be really, really busy on the game-playing front.
owlmoose: (book)
I heard the other day that Amazon had put a release date on their Republic of Thieves page, but given that Amazon has broken my heart with projected release dates before, I was unwilling to believe it. Not until I heard the news direct from the source.

But now Scott Lynch is tweeting about release day parties so I guess I can allow myself some hope. (Although I can't actually find that tweet on his stream. But the date is also mentioned on his blog, which I will also accept as evidence.)

In other words: EEEEEEEEEE!

We started rehearsals for this piece tonight. I don't have anything to say about that, really. I just wanted the excuse to use my Beethoven icon.
