I heard the other day that Amazon had put a release date on their Republic of Thieves page, but given that Amazon has broken my heart with projected release dates before, I was unwilling to believe it. Not until I heard the news direct from the source.

But now Scott Lynch is tweeting about release day parties so I guess I can allow myself some hope. (Although I can't actually find that tweet on his stream. But the date is also mentioned on his blog, which I will also accept as evidence.)

In other words: EEEEEEEEEE!

Based on the Kiss Battle that has run in the Final Fantasy fandom for the last few years (credit to [personal profile] seventhe for the most recent variation on the rules), this is just a fun way to celebrate February with lots of fun kissing fanworks. Any kind of kiss is welcome -- het, slash, femslash; shippy, familial, gen; cheek kisses, mouth kisses, kissing of... other things; serious, fluffy, silly, or all three at once; fanfic, fanart, whatever you come up with; anything goes!

The official post is here. It will open to prompts and comments at approximately 9AM Pacific Time, Thursday February 7th (Click here for the time in your timezone). OpenID and anonymous commenting will be on. If you're curious to see how it works, here's a link to last year's battle.

I just submitted my DA Big Bang story! :D

I've requested a posting date close to the opening date as possible, so I can get it out of the way before Kiss Battles begin. So I hope you will all have the chance to see it soon. :)

We started rehearsals for this piece tonight. I don't have anything to say about that, really. I just wanted the excuse to use my Beethoven icon.

Not just because the president was re-elected, although this is, in my view, a very good thing. But so many other things have made me happy: the first out lesbian elected to the Senate, the first Asian-American woman in the Senate, a disabled female veteran going to the House of Representatives, New York state sending its first Asian woman to the house of representatives, two men who said idiotic things about rape losing their Senate races, two states legalizing pot, same sex marriage legalized in two states (Maine and Maryland) and probably also a third (Washington), and for the first time ever, it looks like voters will be rejecting an anti-marriage equality amendment to a state constitution, in Minnesota.

We are making history here, and making our voices heard. And it is awesome. If Proposition 30 passes (and at last count it was trending upward), my night will be complete. (Although I would have liked to see California ban the death penalty. But it's too popular here; it was never going to happen. I'll content myself with raising a bunch of money for education.)

GIANTS

Once again, I wasn't sure if they could do it, although given that they managed it last time, this time I had a little more faith. I missed the game, sadly, because this hotel room has no television, so I don't have quite the sense of reality I would if I'd seen the boys jumping up and down on the pitchers mound and spraying champagne on each other. Next time I have a good enough Internet connection, I am so watching some celebrations.

World Series starts on Wednesday.

Ack!

The first game of the Giants vs. Reds playoff series is today. T was curious about how much tickets were going for, so we checked StubHub for the heck of it, and there were still seats available, and they weren't nearly as expensive as we thought they would be... so we jumped on it.

I'm going to a playoff game!!! I'm going to watch Matt Cain pitch a playoff game!!!!

This is ridiculously exciting. You have no idea.

Finally, finally this quarter is over -- Saturday was the last day of classes, Monday I had a presentation to faculty, and today was our all-school meeting, which pretty much rounds things out. I guess I never did write that epic post about why it was such a stressful time, but I promise you aren't missing much besides lots of complaining. I don't expect anything much to change next quarter, sadly. But I think we have a better handle now on how to do what we can within the staff and financial limitations the corporate overlords have imposed on us, so it should go more easily. At least until they pull the rug out from under us again.

In today's meeting, and also in his announcements to the faculty yesterday, the dean mentioned me and the other librarian, and gave us kudos for keeping everything together in the face of changes and cutbacks. It was a surprise, and a nice one. I think a lot of us in academic administration are so used to the idea that we will bend over backwards to shield the students and faculty from financial constraints and bad decisions by upper management that it just becomes expected. So it felt good to be acknowledged, to hear that they know it's not an easy thing to do and that our efforts are appreciated.

Anyway. Now I can start putting the last three months behind me and start looking forward to tomorrow, when I will get on a plane and then be in Rome. So excited, you have no idea. Can I just close my eyes and be there now?

My computer is coming with me, and I do have wireless where I'm staying, but I don't expect to be online much, so this is me, mostly signing off for now. Ciao! See you in a week. :)

Whee!

My Doink! assignment has just arrived and I have no idea how I am going to chose among these awesome prompts. So much KJ bait in here, I can't even tell you.

The last time this happened, I wrote two stories (although one was pretty late). Maybe someone will get lucky again. ;)

So excited. :D

It's time!

The solstice has been and gone -- we've turned the corner, and longer days are on the way. A fine reason to celebrate, whatever form the holiday takes.

I'm participating in two DA holiday exchanges this year. I'll crosspost my own contributions later, when they're both finished, but for now I wanted to highlight the two very wonderful gifts that I received. Both are fanart, one is DA:Origins, and the other is DA2.

1. Marian and Bethany Hawke admiring a snow Anders and a snow Ser Pounce-a-Lot, by [tumblr.com profile] ladykleo. A snow Ser Pounce. How adorable is that?! They look so content. And Bethany rocks her holiday robes.

2. Aeducan/Alistair/Anora, by [livejournal.com profile] jessicajones_1, inspired by the series I've been writing about them. Can I tell you just how excited I am to have artwork of my Sereda Aeducan, in Grey Warden armor, and especially in the context of this triad? So, so excited. All three of their expressions are just about perfect, too.

Huge props and thanks to ladykleo and JJ! You have both made my December just a little bit brighter. :)

Saw the The Muppets tonight. I am so, so happy. It just... worked. Hit all the right notes, all the right emotional chords, everything I wanted out of a Muppet movie.

I don't want to say too much, because there were some wonderful surprises that I wouldn't want to spoil for anyone, but I will say this: if you know the Muppets, if you love the Muppets, you must see this movie. The movie is kid-friendly, but it was clearly not written for kids. Its audience is the old-school fans, of the TV show and the original movies. There were some great call-backs to both, especially The Muppet Movie (it makes me so sad that the soundtrack to that seems to be out of print -- I have a compilation with a few tracks, but it's missing some key ones), but it wasn't even really the references as it is the whole feel of the movie. The love for the original show and characters comes through in every single frame. And of course it was hilarious -- A, T, and I all laughed our heads off, and even just thinking back to bits of it can make me grin all over again. So much recommended.

And can I just tell you how I relieved I am? This is my childhood, you know. If they had screwed up this movie, I would never have forgiven them. ([personal profile] missmediajunkie sums up my pre-movie trepidation quite nicely.) Fortunately, my cherished memories are not only intact, they've been burnished even more brightly. Thanks, Hollywood! Seriously.

I have to admit it: I am kind of in love with this DA/FFXII crossover. It's starting to really work for me. And I am going to spam you all with a snippet that only half of you will half-understand. That's just how my obsessions roll right now.

Context: Grey Wardens have tracked a darkspawn horde to Ivalice and are recruiting from among the local populace. Balthier and Basch are among the first group of recruits for various reasons. Nathaniel and m!Surana (who is not "The Warden" in this universe, just one of their number -- f!Cousland is Warden-Commander) are about to board the Strahl for the first time.

Snippet time! )

Considering how uncertain I was of this idea at first, I'm really excited by how smoothly things are coming together. Maybe not smoothly enough to have a rough draft in less than two weeks (who decided having such an early deadline was a good idea? Oh, right, that would be me), but certainly better than it was before. 13,000 words but with a ways to go, plotwise. So we'll see. But I am feeling hopeful, at least for tonight.

I Believe

I am at a bookstore. There is a book. I held it in my hands, and gave the nice bookseller a credit card, and they let me walk away with it in my bag. It is real. And I'm only typing at you all instead of reading it right now because I have to go back to work soon and I'm afraid I might not be able to stop.

It's finally real.

Dear George R. R. Martin: I'm sorry I doubted... well, no, I'm not sorry I doubted you, because I think I had perfectly good reason to do so. But I am very, very happy to have been proven wrong.

Tomorrow morning we leave for a week in New York City. Very excited to be taking our first real vacation in over two years, and especially excited that it's in New York, a city that I love. The last time I went there with T, it was 2003, and January, and in the middle of a cold snap that kept temperatures hovering around zero degrees for most of the trip. Not the best way to experience New York. I think the weather will be more agreeable this time.

Also, given today's events, I am more than happy to support New York with my tourist dollars! A happy coincidence, of course, but I will take it. :)

I'll have my phone along, but I don't expect to be online much during the trip, so this is me, signing off for now. Enjoy the final days of June!

The [community profile] ff_exchange reveal has occurred, and now there is much more tasty Final Fantasy fic in the world than there was this morning, including the gift written for me, a most excellent FFXIII story about Lightning and Sazh. Check it out. :)

Hard Balance by [archiveofourown.org profile] wingedserpent

As for myself, I have two stories in the collection. Both on the lighter side, which made them very fun to write.

A Little Help, FFXII, a story about Reks and Penelo and how they might have met. Gen.

Lost & Found, FFX-2, Gippal/Yuna, on a dig.

Just like last year, I didn't get my act together to write any Moogle Fluff, but I am looking very much forward to the Chocobo Down lists! I always get great ideas from them. Although this year, it will have to complete with my [community profile] newgameplus prompts, which includes much tastiness as well. An abundance of fandom riches! Just the way I like it.
