I gave up on Dune after... the third book? Thereabouts. And haven't touched any of the stuff not written by Herbert. Sounds like you say I shouldn't bother. ;)

I knew maybe half the examples on his list and have heard about most of the others. Have you read any Guy Gavriel Kay? I read The Sarantine Mosaic not long ago and remember thinking that you would likely enjoy it.
