fandom meme

I've seen this or something very much like it before, but this time I actually have time to play with it. Ganked from [livejournal.com profile] mneme_forgets

Tell me of a fandom you know I know of and I'll tell you:

1. The character I first fell in love with
2. The character I never expected to love as much as I do now
3. The character everyone else loves that I don't
4. The character I love that everyone else hates
5. The character I used to love but don't any longer
6. The character I would shag anytime
7. The character I'd want to be like
8. The character I'd slap
9. A pairing that I love
10. A pairing that I despise

Note, there are now spoilers for the latest episode of "Lost" in comments.

Taking the obvious, how about FFX2? XD

I wondered who would be first to this one. ;)

1. Paine. I fell quick, and I fell hard, and my adoration has only grown.
2. Buddy. Maybe he's just a background character, but as time goes by I've come to really appreciate him, just hanging out solidly in the background and being an ordinary real guy who loves his airship.
3. I could probably give a number of answers to this one but I'll say Leblanc. There's a part of me that appreciates her take-no-prisoners attitude, but does she have to be so irritating in the process? And the mindless sighing over her Noojie-Woojie really grates.
4. I guess I'd have to say Nooj. I know he's not terribly popular in the fandom, but I found him intriguing from the very start and the more I write him the more attached I've become.
5. Rikku. I liked her quite well in the first game but couldn't stand where the second game took the character. Very disappointing.
6. Baralai. I know it's the cliche answer, since he's the resident pretty-boy, but it's true nonetheless. Nooj is a very close second.
7. I don't know can say that there's any one character that I would take as a role model, but I do very much like the way that Yuna stands up to Nooj on the Farplane near the end. The strength she shows in that moment is something I admire very much.
8. Brother. One of the most annoying characters in any videgame *ever*.
9. There are a number of these actually, but if I'm only listing one then it's got to be Paine/Nooj. My interest in their history is what drew me into writing fanfic in the first place, and my love for the pairing has only intensified over time.
10. Actually I don't despise any X-2 pairings (assuming Aurikku doesn't count). I do get tired of Yuna/Tidus and Rikku/Gippal, just because they are all over the fandom and so often badly written, especially R/G.

You're into Lost, right? :D If not, how about KH2?

"Baralai. I know it's the cliche answer, since he's the resident pretty-boy..."

You know it. And I'VE got dibs on him, so there ;)

Oh, I think there's enough to go around. ;)

[identity profile] owlmoose.livejournal.com 2006-05-14 01:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I am indeed into Lost. So here you go.

1. Hurley. The ordinary guy that stuff happens around, but sometimes he shows these flashes of insight. They haven't done quite what I'd hoped for with his character but I do adore him still.
2. Jin, totally. They did such a turnaround with my sympathies on him. I should feel jerked around I suppose, but they handled it so well that I don't care.
3. Does anyone actrually like Jack? Well, the show writers clearly do, so I suppose it counts. ;) Ugh, so self-righteous and irritating and he's right more often than not but does he have to be so damn *smug* about it?
4. I don't like Sawyer as a person particularly but I find his character fascinating. And I like the idea of him with Kate.
5. Does Michael count? Hard to say until we know what's really going on with him.
6. Sayid. No contest.
7. There's an awful lot of disfunctional on that island, but let's say Locke. He's a little too willing to give into the mystical appeal of fate, but given what's happened to him I can see why he'd do that. And I like his approach to the island, this idea that they should take what the island is giving them and make a life out of it.
8. Jack. Then Kate. Then Jack again, for good measure.
9. Jin/Sun. They have such an intriguing story and I've found it so interesting to watch develop.
10. Jack/Kate. No, no, no. Kate works much better with Sawyer and I liked how they were setting up Jack/Ana Lucia (although, so much for that, and now I'm really worried that they'll decide Jack and Kate belong together since Ana's gone).
regann: (Tidus/Yuna cherish)

I do get tired of Yuna/Tidus and Rikku/Gippal, just because they are all over the fandom and so often badly written, especially R/G.

OH HELL YEAH. I've got so much love for the R/G pairing and so much un-love for the R/G fandom. It is so bad. There were better fic in Yu-Gi-Oh. I swear.
regann: (Weevil - Veronica Mars)

[personal profile] regann 2006-05-14 01:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Veronica Mars! First Season only, of course. ^^

[identity profile] mneme-forgets.livejournal.com 2006-05-14 02:09 pm (UTC)(link)
So tell me what *you* think of Kingdom Hearts. :) I am curious.

[identity profile] owlmoose.livejournal.com 2006-05-14 02:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Note that all of this is subject to change as of August 22nd. ;)

1. Veronica. Best teenage female protaganist on TV ever, bar none. Yes, that includes Buffy.
2. Absolutely Logan. They set him up to be the typical teenage black hat and then we discover that he is oh so much more than that. And yet he doesn't lose the qualities that made us hate him in the first place. He is fantastically complex and I love that.
3. I don't know that I have an answer for this one, partly because I still basically like everyone and because I haven't been around the fandom enough to know who the favorites are. Maybe Lilly Kane -- she's interesting, but I also think she made a lot of stupid choices, and in the end she comes off as rather spoiled.
4. Duncan. Maybe he doesn't bring the non-stop snarky fun, but I like him. Sometimes he comes off as wooden, but then we learn there's a reason for that and, like Logan, the character is turned all upside down.
5. I haven't been in the fandom long enough to feel that way about anyone. Maybe Wallace?
6. Since they are all teenagers, I don't find myself really drawn to any of them that way. (Funny how that doesn't bother me with FFX-2. Maybe it's the difference between anime and living, breathing teenage(-appearing) actors.) Jake Kane is rather attractive.
7. Keith Mars. I adore his dedication to Veronica, to the truth, to his principles, to Wallace's mom (who's name I've forgotten).
8. Liane Mars. I literally wanted to reach into the tv and strangle her in the season one finale. Duncan's mother could use a good smack upside the head as well.
9. Veronica/Logan. I know, me and everyone else. Normally the hate=love thing doesn't work for me but it's developed so fantastically here that I am totally sucked in.
10. Again, not so much with the despising. I do hope that Keith doesn't go back to Liane, though.

I guess I had that coming. ;)

1. Sora. His story is the classic "chosen by fate for an impossible task", but he's so *cheerful* about it. It's never "oh woe, why is this awful thing happening to me." He just carries on, making friends everywhere he goes, occasionally losing sight of his goal but always coming back to the right thing in the end. I like him a lot.
2. Hm, probably Riku. In the first game, especially at the start, he's this punk kid who makes up for whatever inherent insecurities he has by needing to best Sora at every turn. But his journey through darkness changed him in ways that I find interesting.
3. Does Cloud count? He has never, ever done all that much for me, in any incarnation (although to be fair I haven't seen AC yet).
4. I'd say Kairi, especially in the second game. It *is* hard to be the one left behind, waiting and wondering. But she never loses faith and I like that.
5. Donald grates sometimes. And where did that totally random obession with treasure come from? I don't remember anything like that in the first game.
6. Hard one. Leon maybe. Axel intrigues as well. I have also always been oddly drawn to the Beast for some bizarre reason, ever since the movie. Maybe it's his voice, or his total devotion to Belle. Oh, and Auron. Mustn't forget Auron. ;)
7. I like your answer of Goofy for this one. He's the stable one, the one who never forgets their goal, and as you say he tries to think the best of everyone, in such a goodhearted way that you understand the impulse even when it turns out to be a mistake.
8. No one comes to mind immediately. Maybe Ariel, or Simba. Donald occasionally.
9. I find the possibilities of Axel/Roxas extraordinarily intriguing and I wish more people would explore them.
10. I wouldn't go so far as to say I *despise* Sora/Riku, but I find them much more interesting as friendly rivals rather than making it all about subtext (that I don't even really see).

Final Fantasy 8! :D

[identity profile] owlmoose.livejournal.com 2006-05-15 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
1. Quistis. She seemed the most real to me. I wish the game had done more with her.
2. I suppose Edea. Best villian reversal *ever*.
3. Not sure about this one. Maybe Seifer. For a supposedly complex villian, he just doesn't interest me that much.
4. Absolutely Rinoa. She is so despised and I don't understand why.
5. I started out adoring Zell but he kind of fell off for me, maybe because the game didn't develop him as much as it could have. I've only played the game once, so my feelings for the characters haven't fluctuated that much over time.
6. Probably Laguna, if I had to pick. Or maybe Squall.
7. In this bunch? I don't know, that's a hard one. I suppose I admire Quistis the most.
8. Selphie. In the immortal words of Auron: "Calm down!"
9. My FFVIII pairing of choice is Squall/Quistis, mostly because her feelings for him are so clear and I wish she'd had more of a shot with him.
10. Squall/Laguna. No, no, no. No. I understand some people like the total screwiness of it, and with other characters maybe I could understand, but it just seems so out of character for Laguna.

[identity profile] yuna-flowering.livejournal.com 2006-05-15 10:11 am (UTC)(link)
Squall/Laguna fic exists??? *dies* You've got to be kidding me... oh, and I agree on #6. It'd be either him or Zell :)
