Unless your Borders is way different than any I've ever been to, the answer to that would be a big NO. If you're a cashier, you're paid at a certain rate. The people who DO put books on shelves, the Inventory Process Team, are paid at a different rate. Essentially, you can't do their job.
In my store, the cashiers often worked on reshelving and straightening the magazines, but that was because the mags were right next to the registers, which is the case in most stores. Basically if you're a cashier you're not supposed to leave the register area.
