Notes: For [livejournal.com profile] mneme_forgets, who asked for Baralai and recreation.

Baralai had mentioned something about needing to relax, so Paine had expected him to answer the door with a book in hand, not wielding an eight-inch knife.

"It's soothing," he explained, walking into the kitchen. "After a long day, I come home and take out my frustrations on some vegetables." He handed her another knife. "Here, you try."

Paine tested the edge on her prey: a carrot. "Strange, using one of these on something that doesn't fight back."

He laughed and reached for an onion. They chopped in companionable silence as the comforting smell of stewing meat filled the air.

*snerk*

Baralai: I like to kill things. It's so relaxing. ^^

<--Parron's mental image upon reading the first sentence. :D

In all seriousness, I thought this was really cute. And a little silly, too. :P I'll bet the person you wrote it for likes it, too...

I like the idea of Baralai relaxing by taking out agressions. Since he's always so laid back it makes a gret deal of sense.

Cooking is also definitely a productive way of relaxing. Heh, and it amuses me too, because it *isn't* really just relaxation if you're doing something productive too, is it? But again, I can see how Baralai would react that way.

I like the way that Paine seems to find it all a novelty and a cause for some amusement.

This is a pleasant little slice of life story. I enjoyed it a great deal. Thank you. :)

Heh. I love your Baralai. He seems so real.

And the image of him greeting Paine at the door with a large knife is rather appealing in an unexpected way.

Thanks! I really enjoy writing Baralai; I should do it more.

Isn't it? :D I know if I were Paine, having the memories I do of Baralai, the image would take me aback, just for a second....

You're welcome! I enjoyed writing it -- any excuse to put Baralai in a kitchen. ;) (I made him a hobbyist gourmet chef in A Guardian's Legacy and somehow it became an key part of his character for me. I do think he would find a way to relax that was both practical and a way of releasing tension, and cooking definitely fits the bill.)

Baralai: I like to kill things. It's so relaxing.

Well, given the way you write Baralai... ;)

Anyway, glad you enjoyed it! I'm not sure what first drove me to portray Baralai someone who cooked for fun and pleasure, but now I can't think of him any other way. :)

XD;; I really do have the habit of turning Baralai violent, don't I? Oops...

Baralai: I like to kill things. It's so relaxing.
Paine: ...Uh-huh...
Baralai: ^^ That's why I invited you over...
Paine: ...uh...
Baralai: Come on, I just finished preparing. Come to the kitchen with me.
Paine: Y'know, I think Yuna's calling...

More seriously... I see Baralai as maybe not the best cook, but one of those people who takes the recipe really seriously. Following each step to the letter, starting over if he messes up... XD I don't know why I got stuck with that mental image, though. I can see the good cook thing too, though. :P Relieving stress by killing carrots...

Lol! Baralai's cute. I can just imagine that scene, too... "strange, using one of these on something that doesn't fight back..." :)
