So I'm finally getting around to reading The DaVinci Code. I'm about three-quarters of the way through.
My expectations were set pretty low.
So far, they're being met.
I had been warned that the writing was bad. But I never imagined it could be this bad. It is quite possibly the most pedestrian prose I've ever seen in a published novel. So much exposition, and almost all of it clunky; cheap cliffhangers; gratuitous point-of-view switches; characters who don't say or think things that would be logical for them to say or think for the sole purpose of hiding a "surprise" from the reader.
Given the ubiquitousness of this book in the media, I was spoiled for the "big secret" that the Priory is protecting a long time ago. I suppose I should withhold judgement re. the plot (such as it is) and the murder mystery until I finish the book, but so far I'm not terribly impressed. We'll see.
I am curious how much of the information regarding the art, DaVinci, and the history of the various secret societies is true -- it's not a subject I know all that much about. I imagine that finding books about it that have no agenda one way or another is almost impossible, but maybe I'll poke around a bit when I finish. Anyone know of anything? (I have read Foucoult's Pendulum, or most of it anyway, which covers similar ground and, I gather, is more reputable.)
