danger

I really ought to know better than to show up an hour and a half early for dinner when an excellent book store is only steps from the restaurant. I resisted more than I bought, but I still walked out with several volumes under my arm, and I didn't even make it to the used fiction annex. The latest Thursday Next book is out in paperback now, so of course I had to get that, and then I came across a used copy of Mind Wide Shut, a light book on the inner workings of the brain that I've been meaning to read for over a year. Plus I found a couple of books on writing by authors I admire (Bill Bryson and Susie Bright); I'd always wanted an excuse to pick up each but could never justify it, but now that I'm actually writing again I figure they'll come in handy.

Just what I needed: more on the to-read pile. Now, I'm never really happy unless I'm at least half a dozen books behind (the thought of running out of books to read has always filled me with abject terror), but I really haven't had much time to read lately. I've been working on Sailing to Sarantium for what feels like weeks, and it's not exactly a long or dense work, and I'm enjoying it a great deal. But the only time I really sit and read these days is over lunch, so I'm only getting it in half-hour chunks.

T and I are heading to LA for a four-day weekend a week from today; maybe I'll get some time to kick back with a book or two then.
