When I first got my license I would drive around on purpose to try to get lost.

I've done that. Just driven some road to see where it goes, not really caring if it's the long way around or takes some weird detour. I have a very good sense of direction (it's my superpower), so I never really worry about getting lost -- I can always find my way back to something familiar. My mom loves to do the same thing.

You're right about the high cost of gas making that harder. Although gas has been so expensive in CA for so long that I barely even notice anymore.
