I think that particular post was very focused on depictions of homosexuality in modern Western media, because that was the context of the discussion, but I agree that taking a broader look at the topic would be illuminating. Because yeah, that has definitely varied depending on time and place and culture, so it's not really fair to make universal/blanket statements about it.
