Oooooh. So the trilogy was a later development. Well, Tolkien left a wealth of material so I guess this could work. I'm pretty easy going about these movies unlike the hardcore LOTR fans of various flavors (the original Tolkien Society purists vs the fantasy movie freaks vs ...). Given that some of my family members consider Tolkien's entire body of work a holy creation to be shelved next to the Old and New Testaments, the Koran, the Mahabharata, and the Chinese Buddhist Canon, I take all of Jackson's movies in stride, asking little more than to make it an ultra jawdroppingly detailed feast for the eyes when viewed on the big screen and, whenever possible, clean up some of the problematic elements so I can enjoy the week long religious viewings that have occurred every winter since LOTR came out. ;D

(Gimme the costume porn and scenery porn.)

And, oh no, no. No desire to start a Cumberbatch war at all. I enjoy his acting, especially in a brilliant revisioning and revoicing as Holmes. (waves gigantic peace flag to all passersby)

Freeman's Watson grew on me slowly and then suddenly. Great updating of the character. (I sort of ignore Sherlock fandom much in the same way I ignore almost all popular fandoms due to the fact that my personal interests usually don't map to popular fannish interests.)

I suspect a Hobbit pilgrimage will occur this weekend or next. Yes, I did say pilgrimage. ;)
