Even if tumblr had a way of filtering the stuff you follow, it would make a world of difference. I only follow about 20 people on Tumblr, and that's because I couldn't imagine any more. The people who post frequently overwhelm the ones who don't post as often, and, as lassarina said, you could spend HOURS trying to catch yourself up if you just miss one day.

IN terms of privacy, they do have an option to make a blog entirely private, but then it sort of negates the whole 'social' aspect of it. I know I have at least one Tumblr that I keep to myself, but it's because blogging in Tumblr is super streamlined with the categories they offer for your posts. I wish DW would implement something like that (posting text vs. posting quotes vs. photos, etc.).

I love Tumblr (and all social media in general) but there's no one platform to rule them all. The closest is probably Twitter (words, imagesharing, video sharing, cross posting, etc.), but because you're confined to 140 characters, it's hard to express yourself thoroughly.
