Leia's "I love you" is the revelation, because it's already understood between them that he loves her--- because that is what the kiss meant, and they both know it; what hasn't been brought out between them openly is that LEIA LOVES HIM BACK.
Yep, that's one of the things I get out of that post, too. That it's Leia who's been holding back, and they both know it.
Gone back and rewatched with a modern, critical eye, lots of folks point out that the original trilogy wasn't so "objectively good" either -- although I totally disagree on Empire, which I'd put up against just about any SF movie of its time or any time -- and they just seem better through the haze of nostalgia. ;) But I hear you, on preferring a poorly-written story that strikes a chord with you. There's nothing wrong with that. :)
