Monday Media Musings - 10/7/19

Arrowverse: I caught up on Saturday! I focused mainly on The Flash and Arrow, but I also watched the final two episodes of Supergirl and Legends just so the finales could be fresh in my mind (although it turns out that Legends isn't back on until January). The shared world feels like it's starting to fall apart, though. Every single issue that the Earth-1 shows were facing had implications on a global scale: : the threat that Cicada would kill all metas world-wide, Emiko Queen and her flesh-eating virus, Neron opening up a portal to hell in Washington DC (insert joke about whether anyone would notice here)... These all seem like all-hands-on-deck emergencies, and while I understand the teams can't be everywhere at once, it seems like there ought to have at least been a phone call (snarky aside from Nate about how they should have participated in the crossover notwithstanding), especially warnings to Dinah and Nate about the potential risk to metas. And except for the brief appearances of Mar Novu in the Supergirl and Legends finale, only Arrow seems to be leaning in to the upcoming Crisis event.

I was not at all surprised to learn that Oliver's deal with the Monitor was a trade of his life for Barry's and Kara's -- it is exactly the kind of trade he would accept, and seems like the kind of bargain this entity would drive. Such rough luck for Felicity, though, and I can see how his death in this manner would lead to the crapsack future we saw for Star City in 2040. I have to wonder if some aspect of the final Arrow season will lead to an unraveling of that future, to allow the characters a less bleak ending and set up the rumored backdoor pilot for Mia Smoak and the Canaries.

Good thing I finished when I did, because it's season premiere week for three of the shows... I haven't decided whether I'm going to write up every single episode as I watch it, but for at least these premieres I think I will, and see how it goes with time and having interesting things to say.

Batwoman series premiere: It became quickly clear that, as an origin story, the pilot goes back in time, prior to when we first met Kate Kane in the 2018 Elseworlds crossover. Overall I suppose this choice makes sense, although it would've been nice to see a CW show take a break from the origin story character introduction. I also wonder how the show will manage to catch up to the Crisis timeframe while also dealing with the potential antagonists introduced in Elseworlds. I guess what I'm saying is that the overall narrative has bitten off quite a lot, and only time will tell whether it's capable of chewing. Big picture aside, the pilot was fine -- it set up what it needed to set up, introduced who it needed to introduce, and left me curious to see what comes next. Not brilliance, but then none of the other CW pilots were, either.

Supergirl S5 premiere: "Pants!"

Since I have been yelling at Kara to reveal her secret to Lena for at least a season now, it was a big relief when she did, even if it was too late, and despite what Lena says to Holly at the end, I think she was genuinely moved that Kara was finally honest with her, and at least some of what she said in the Pulitzer introduction was true in her heart, not just a hastily-calculated revamp of her plan for revenge. That said, I'm sure she also means it when she says she wants vengeance, and it should be interesting. I am less interested in J'onn's brother, especially if it turns out he's mostly a pawn of Mar Novu. Although I suppose having two parallel revenge plotlines could work out okay. I might have rewound the moment between Brainy and Nia to rewatch it. Once. Or twice. Or a few more times than that. Given that the last time the writers of this show allowed my ship to sail, they crashed it within two episodes, I was a little nervous, so I am relieved that it seems to be well on its way to sticking around.
