Reading goals for 2021

Time to check in on reading goals from 2020 and set some for next year.

In 2020, I gave myself a goal of reading 40 books; according to Goodreads, I read 29, and frankly I'm going to consider getting even that close to be a win, given what happened this year. Only 6 were by authors of color (5 unique authors), which is not a great track record at all, of which only one (Silvia Garcia Moreno) was new to me, and that I do not consider a win at all. My other goal, to read at least 10 books off my TBR and do a cull of that shelf, was also not accomplished; in part, the pandemic is to blame for that one, because I don't know that used bookstores or libraries would even take books right now, and that's also we put off our planned remodel (I hope we feel safe to do it this summer, but we'll see).

Because I expect that not much will change in terms of my life and the world situation, at least not in the first half of 2021, I'm going to go easier on the reading goals, and set them as follows:

  1. Undertake that planned ruthless weeding of the TBR shelf before the end of January. It's okay if the book just moves from the shelf to a box for later selling/donation -- I don't need to get it out of the house right away. Prioritize keeping books by authors I've never read before and books by authors of color. Of the books I keep, read at least one every month.

  2. Make the switch from Goodreads to Storygraph. I've been meaning to do this forever, and I imported my library several months ago, but never got around to doing anything more with it. My username is owlmoose (of course) if you'd like to add me as a friend.

  3. Read 36 books -- three books a month. On the one hand, that feels absurdly low, but on the other it's been awhile since I've read that much. So it's a realistic goal but still a challenge, whether I want to admit it or not.

  4. At least 33% authors of color, or at least one book a month out of the three, which is a step back I hate to take even more, but again the plan for 2021 is to set goals I can realistically meet, and that is one I've hit (and exceeded!) before.

So that's the plan, and we'll see how it goes.
