TWW finale

The finale was nice, marked all the right moments, but in the end it didn't feel like the farewell to the characters that I wanted. In part, I think that's because some of the characters weren't saying farewell the way we were -- Josh, Sam, and Donna all moving back into the White House just as we were all preparing to leave it really didn't hit the right emotional notes for me. In a way, I think I would have gotten more closure if Santos had lost, if we had seen the near-strangers on Vinick's team making a respectful entrance as all our old friends were heading out. Instead we have this feeling of "over but not over, life goes on but you won't get to see it", which is vaguely unsatisfying.

Also, no Toby? Yes, the whole bit with his pardon made him a presence in a way, but I wanted him there. They couldn't have taken a few seconds to show him at home, watching the inauguration on TV? Because you know he was. And then he's interrupted by a phone call....

There were a few lovely things. Jed saying goodbye to Charlie. Will tossing Toby's ball against the wall. "WWLD?" But for me, the real finale was last week, seeing CJ trying to decide what to do with the rest of her life and having those glorious moments with Toby and Danny. This was just a postscript. A tasteful, well-executed postscript, but nonetheless.

I'm glad the show got these last two seasons. If they had cancelled it back when NBC first threatened to, I would probably have had a bad taste in my mouth. As it is, it didn't quite go out on the top of its game, but there was a definite return to form, and I appreciate that. At its best, it was one of the greatest shows ever, and I am going to miss it.

I also was bummed that Toby wasn't in it at all. :(

Jed's goodbye with Charlie was good. I thought that Charlie wanted to work for CJ again. Where did Georgetown Law come from? Also, I wanted to know what happened with him and Zoey.

Yeah, I thought that about Charlie too. But then again, I loved the fact that Jed wrote him a letter of recommendation.

Yeah, that was nice that he wrote a letter for him.

Same here, on all counts. But maybe Charlie decided he didn't want to spend zillions of dollars to build roads in Africa. Or he realized that he was squandering his last chance to get a letter of recommendation for law school from a sitting President of the United States. ;) Still, a throwaway line to that effect would have been nice....

So, I warned you about that weird commercial for that new show with Josh in it.

Turns out, it's the new Sorkin show. And it also stars Danny, er Timothy Busfield. I guess I know what's replacing WW in my TV schedule now.

OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG

IMDB says it also stars Matthew Perry. *drool* Sorkin writing for Chandler. *megadrool*

This is even better: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Studio_60_on_the_Sunset_Strip

*thunk*

I must have missed that commercial! I heard Matthew Perry was going to be in a new show, but I didn't know it was a Sorkin show.

We have our TiVo configured with 30-sec skip, so we just hit the button a few times and bounce over the commercials. But Scott stopped because we saw Josh, but it was a very un-Josh Josh. Then we both shuddered and he hit the button again.

But this morning, I read a CNN.com article about the WW ender, and it mentioned the show and that it was a Sorkin show. So I looked further. And now I'm bouncing around squeeling a little.

I'm really glad I didn't delete the show of the Tivo yet, now I need to hunt down that commercial!

[identity profile] luvmoose.livejournal.com 2006-05-15 02:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep, that's what I'm doing as soon as I get home. I seem to remember it being about half-way through.

[identity profile] owlmoose.livejournal.com 2006-05-15 02:14 pm (UTC)(link)
You also mentioned that there was a mistake in the show.

What was that? I didn't catch anything but T kept bugging me with questions so I may have missed a couple of things.

Conversation between Jed and Abby about the date of the inauguration. Who decided to put it in January anyway? Jed didn't know.

It was moved to from Mar 3 to Jan 20 in the 20th Amendment in 1933 to reduce the lame duck period. Roosevelt's second term was the first time it occurred on that date. Jed would have sooooo known that.

Scott had to run upstairs and check Wikipedia on it. And then he declared that he was never watching the show again after that episode.

[identity profile] letters-to-ed.livejournal.com 2006-05-15 02:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I thought that was weird too because I knew it was an Amendment to the Constitution (but I dodn't know which #). That was very out of character for Jed.

[identity profile] luvmoose.livejournal.com 2006-05-15 02:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe it wasn't in that copy he gave Charlie...

[identity profile] letters-to-ed.livejournal.com 2006-05-15 03:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha! Yeah, that must be it! :)

[identity profile] owlmoose.livejournal.com 2006-05-15 05:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, Jed would *totally* have known that. I didn't, though. ;)

[identity profile] luvmoose.livejournal.com 2006-05-15 05:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, Scott didn't know the details, but it gnawed at him so much, he paused the show, jumped up and went to Wikipedia, looked up the real details, and then sqawked about it a little during the rest of the show.

[identity profile] owlmoose.livejournal.com 2006-05-15 05:54 pm (UTC)(link)
The thing that had T squawking was later, when CJ walked out the gate and the tourists asked her if she worked at the White House. He started complaining about how unrealistic that was, that civilians would be allowed so close to the building, until he remembered that 9/11 never happened in this universe. And here I was, trying to savor the bittersweet moment with CJ...

I really should have told him to hold his questions until the end. ;)

"Salon" has a short piece about the ending you may enjoy.

Thanks for the link! It was a nice piece, although I actually thought the last two seasons were better overall than the last season or two of Sorkin.
