Really random Final Fantasy question

What's the plural of Ochu? Ochus? Ochui? Ochoa?

I have to admit, my Latin roots? Not the best. Or is Ochu even derived from Latin? Hmm.

I treat it like moose and deer -- there are several ochu. XD

[identity profile] parron.livejournal.com 2006-05-24 05:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Ochu always sounded Japanese in origin to me-- O-chuu. In which case, there would be no real plural--"Five Ochu," or something.

[identity profile] owlmoose.livejournal.com 2006-05-25 07:10 am (UTC)(link)
Just out of curiosity, what does o-chuu mean, if anything?

[identity profile] parron.livejournal.com 2006-05-25 07:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, "O" adds respect to the word... tea is "cha" and a lot of people will say "ocha" instead. As for chuu... well... It's the sound effect of a kiss? Sometimes for a mouse, too? XD I'm honestly not sure what it's supposed to mean. In Zelda I think there's an enemy called a "Chuu," and I know Pokemon's "Pikachuu" has the same thing going. But no, I'm not exactly sure what chuu is supposed to mean in this case. XD (can't you tell Parron has younger siblings from this comment?)

I hope it is not related to kissing. If there is a less kissable monster in the FF universe, I don't want to see it. Well, maybe it's tied with the Marlboro.

Thanks for the info. :)

The problem with Japanese is that each word can have several meanings, depending on how it's written (the opposite is true, too, sometimes words are read differently in different circumstances, depending on context). Checking my dictionary, "chuu" can be:

"the sound of a kiss"
companion
comment (like, notes)
sake ("for the sake of")
air/mid-air
resident
medium/medicorce
loyalty/devotion

...And there are more, almost definetly. Hmm. Now you've got me wondering what it means, too... >__>

Intersting. That's quite a broad collection of possible meanings.

But none of those seem to bear much relationship to walking carniverious plants....

[identity profile] parron.livejournal.com 2006-05-25 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
XD There's always the possibility that someone sneezed, "a-chuu!" And then they said, hey, that works!

I know that isn't a comprehensive list, though. XD There are probably several more (for some reason, I keep thinking "jelly" can somehow be related to the word, although yeah--not too much plant-relevance there).

I agree with regann and hinikuish, though i was going to use the word 'sheep' as an example.

You did not like 'ochii' or 'ochui'? How about 'ochopi'?

I like them all; I was just wondering if anyone knew the "real" answer. ;) I don't know if there is a "real" answer, though.

"Ochopi" might work. Does it have eight of anything? Tentacles, maybe?

All of these are just foolishness. It is a game MC and I sometimes play- making up faux plurals. The 'Ochopi' was a play off one of the odder plurals for 'octopus' (octopodi). Pay no attention to me; sometimes I get terminally silly. ;)

You? Never!!

;)

So, which direction shall we go? Ochus, or is it like moose et. al.?

Ochu it is.

One ochu, two ochu, a herd of ochu... shall we invent a collective noun as well?

I

[identity profile] kunstarniki.livejournal.com 2006-05-25 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
By all means - a cauliflower of ochu. ;)

A squander of ochu
A gesundheit of ochu

It's not Latin, but then, I'm a classics major who uses "forums". :P

English adds -s. We're so full of borrowings that I don't see much problem with doing that, though, in this case, as it does sound like a rather Japanese word to me, I might slip over and use their method!

[identity profile] owlmoose.livejournal.com 2006-05-25 05:12 pm (UTC)(link)
What? Not fora? I'm shocked, shocked! ;)

I agree, there's nothing wrong with "Ochus", but it does look strange to me. Maybe it's because so few English words that are pluralized end in "u". Hmmm.
