Christmas favorites meme
I love Christmas, so I couldn't resist stealing this one from
madlorivoldmort.
Favorite Song: The Barenaked Ladies/Sarah McLaughlin medley of "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" and "We Three Kings". These are also my favorite carols, along with "Angels We Have Heard on High" (the alto part for that song is awesome). My church youth choir used to go caroling, and singing those songs in four-part harmony was always amazing.
Favorite Tradition: E's annual tree decorating party. His birthday is in early December, so he invites us all over to decorate his Christmas tree as a birthday celebration. He has lovely ornaments, and it's always fun to put them up, especially since I haven't had a tree of my own in recent years.
Favorite Childhood Tradition: Waking up early to run downstairs, dump out our stockings, and look at the Christmas presents (my parents never put them under the tree until after we had gone to bed on Christmas eve). We weren't allowed to open any gifts until after breakfast, so there was a lot of time to anticipate.
Favorite Food: So hard to pick, because I love most Thanksgiving/Christmas food. But if I have to choose, I guess I say good pumpkin pie.
Favorite Drink: Eggnog, no question. With brandy (not rum!) and fresh nutmeg. Yum.
Favorite Present: One year when I was a kid, I wanted a bike. I must have been somewhere around 10. But there was nothing nearly big enough to be a bike under the tree, so I resigned myself to disappointment. My family had the tradition of open-me-last gifts -- the largest, most expensive, and/or most highly anticipated present had "open me last" written on the tag, and that year, my open-me-last was an envelope. I was young enough not to realize the implications of this, so I was very confused until I opened it... and found a picture of a bike. My real bike (pink with handlebar streamers and a white flowered banana seat) was in the garage. It made me very happy.
Favorite Movie: Not big on Christmas movies usually. I guess I'll say "A Christmas Story" because it's really funny.
Favorite TV Special: "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" closely followed by "Charlie Brown Christmas"
Favorite Book: "The Greatest Christmas Pageant Ever" -- did they ever make a movie of that?
Favorite Decoration: Christmas lights. I love them all, anywhere you can put them, especially colored lights, especially near shiny ornaments that reflect the colors. So pretty. When I was a kid, I loved to sit in a darkened room with only the tree light on and read.
