In honor of Saturday's concert:

A poll.

[Poll #761965]

This idea shamelessly stolen from someone on [livejournal.com profile] plantgirl's friends list. I've wanted an excuse to do this for ages.

Where's the "estrogen" option?

Good question. You would have to ask Them. ;)

As a physicist, i must complain, the second to last one 'a huge atom smashing machine' is horribly inacurate. The sun is a gigantic ball of gas that fuses hydrogen into helium, it does not split atoms.

Hmmm. Maybe "smooshing" would work better.

Although actually, "smash" requires a collision, and there's some bits expelled during the fusion process, yesh? Otherwise we wouldn't have light or other solar radiation.

I suppose you could use smoosh, though that doesn't have the same dramatic qualities as the word fusion :-D

The only thing that is emitted from a fusion reaction is electromagnetic radiation, not actually a particle, though there is evidence to suggest that light waves can behave like a particle. Light is a strange thing, it has behavioural characteristics of both gamma wave radiation and a particle.

Ah, right!

(humanities major daughter of two scientists who knows these things but has become sloppy)

I will now be hypnotized by your icons.

I can't believe we are discussing actual science against the backdrop of the same loonies who made "she set your goldfish free / and now she's sighing / blew out your pilot light / and made a wish" sound soulful.

I know. Isn't it beautiful? :D

Only on LJ... :-)

[identity profile] furitaurus.livejournal.com 2006-07-05 03:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Lol, no worries :-D

I hope you like them, it took me a long time to find these animated gifs.

Lol, well as i've found out, nothing cannot be discussed on lj.

Oh, by the way, the name's chris, or Furi, whichever you fancy :-)

The song on which this bit of silliness was based is decades old, probably written in the '50s or even earlier. So the science is out of date and, quite possibly, wrong. ;)
