I don't think I've ever been so glad to see a baseball season end.
2-15. That's how the Giants finished the season. In a pennant race at the beginning of September, and they started the month strong, only to collapse utterly at the end. Swept by the Brewers, the Nationals, the Pirates?!?, and then to end with the second consecutive series sweep by the Dodgers.... ick. They couldn't even knock the Dodgers out of the playoffs. Two out of three, that would have done it. But no. They had to give up three early leads in a row.
The whole season has been like this. Moments of brilliance, intersperced with idiocy and frustration. I saw two good games, and one of the idiotically frustating ones (just last week; my boss took the student workers out to the ballgame).
Next year, the team will probably look quite different. Several key players have contracts up this year, including Barry Bonds, and I think there's a good chance that the owners won't shell out the big bucks to keep him here, given how rapidly he is showing his age (although, to be fair, he looked much better this year than he did the year before). The manager is done -- that was announced today. In some ways, I'll be happy to see changes, given how far this team fell, but I had just gotten used to some of these faces, and it'll be odd to have them gone. Either way, though, they are likely to suck next year. Maybe 2008, more likely 2009 before a real decent team is fielded. It'll be interesting to see how much I can bring myself to care.
P.S.: Go Mets! Go Detroit (because I love a worst-to-first story)! Go
everyone-who-is-not-the-Yankees-or-the-Dodgers! If we end up with a Yankees-Dodgers World Series, I think I may have to root for the Apocolypse, and we wouldn't want that, would we?
