In alphabetical order:

1. "Bank Job", Barenaked Ladies -- I know those of you who saw lots of shows on the BLAM tour are tired of this one, but I still can't get enough of it live. I heard its debut at Mohegan Sun and fell in love, then was somewhat disappointed by the album version. But in concert I think it works really well, even if that original performance will always be the definitive version in my mind.


2. "Bare Necessities", Bare Necessities -- This is English country dance music and it is simply lovely, a bare setting for flute, guitar, and violin. So fluid. I could put it on repeat and fall asleep to it every night. In college, I watched a group of dancers perform to it once, and it was magical.


3. "Being in Love", Meryn Cadell -- This album (Angel Food for Thought, a sort of mix of spoken word, music, and performance art, sort of like Lori Anderson) was in heavy rotation during college, and this song got quoted a lot.


4. "Birdhouse in Your Soul", They Might Be Giants -- The first rock band I ever truly loved, the first I ever saw in concert, the first I ever saw more than once. And this is the first song on the first album of theirs I bought. Listening to it always makes me happy.


5. "Boulevard of Broken Songs", Green Day vs. Oasis vs. Travis vs. Aerosmith -- This is the best mash-up I know. They all work so well together, especially "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" and "Wonderwall", to the point where I can't hear either song without thinking of the other now.


6. "Breakfast at Tiffany's", Deep Blue Something -- One of the sweetest and most singable songs about the end of a relationship ever. Back when this was new, I used to flip radio stations hoping to hear it.


7. "Bring on the Night", The Police -- Given current developments, I had to pick a Police song. I still can't quite believe that this reunion tour thing is real. I've often said that if I could go back in time and see any band in concert, it would be this one. I doubt it will be the same, but really, how can I resist? Even if tickets end up being a million zillion dollars each. (Anyone local want to go? No dates have been announced here yet, but I can't imagine they'd skip the Bay Area.)


8. "Broken Wings", Mr. Mister -- Why yes, it is cheesy '80s pop. I still find it completely irresistible. One of the first singles I bought off iTunes (actually I probably got it free with a Pepsi cap code).


9. "Brothers in Arms", Dire Straits -- Possibly the perfect album-ending song, I've always been a fan of it, but now I can't hear it without picturing the final scenes of the last episode of The West Wing, Season Two. If there's a better pairing of a stirring television scene with popular music, I don't know what it is.


10. "By My Side", Stephen Schwartz - From the musical Godspell, which I've actually never seen, but my mom had the original stage version soundtrack and I listened to it constantly growing up. The stage version is also what I have now on CD, but I used to have a tape of the movie soundtrack. That version of "By My Side" is completely different, more dramatic, but also hauntingly beautiful in its own way.
