Character meme

Haven't done an interactive fandomy meme in awhile, and this one looks interesting. Ganked from [livejournal.com profile] hinikuish and [livejournal.com profile] lucil_luzzu. (Note! There are now spoilers for Fruits Basket #17 in comments.)

Choose a character from a fandom that I know--video game, movie, book, tv show, etc.--and I'll answer the questions below.

1) What is your opinion of this character? If you like, explain why you like him/her. Likewise if you dislike the character.
2) Is he/she important to the general plot?
3) Can you relate to this character at all? Do they grip you emotionally?
4) How much do you like the fandom that this character comes from?
5) Do you ship this character with any other character? Or, are you particularly intrigued by their relationship with any other character(s)? (romance-wise or platonic)
6) Is there anything about the character you would change? (Personality wise, not anything pertaining to the plot.)
7) If you were in the fandom with this character, how do you see yourself interacting with him/her? (Would you get along well? Fall in love with? Dislike? Friendly rivalry? etc etc)
8) Does this character make the cut as one of your all time favorites (if you like) or most hated?
9) Would you hype up this character (if you like) or warn about (if you dislike) to someone who's new to the fandom?
10) Is this character popular with the fanbase?

SORATA. AND KAMUI.

AND TIDUS.

AND AKITO.

So I've only read X once, so my opinions etc. of characters are really first impressions

Sorata

1) What is your opinion of this character? If you like, explain why you like him/her. Likewise if you dislike the character.
Sorata is fun. I like his energy and enthusiasm and committment to his friends -- not just Arashi, but all of them.

2) Is he/she important to the general plot?
He's definitely a secondary character, but I'd say an important one.

3) Can you relate to this character at all? Do they grip you emotionally?
I don't know that I relate to him, but I find his "doomed by prophecy" arc compelling on an emotional level. Although I'm not sure whether I want to love him or smack him when it comes to him accepting his fate as inevitable.

4) How much do you like the fandom that this character comes from?
I enjoyed the manga quite a bit and should probably read it again. I have almost no experience with the fandom as a group; I haven't spent enough time with the source to get as much out of it.

5) Do you ship this character with any other character? Or, are you particularly intrigued by their relationship with any other character(s)? (romance-wise or platonic)
Sorata/Arashi is a lovely ship, and since it's so strongly canon, especially on his side, I can't really see shipping him with anyone else.

6) Is there anything about the character you would change? (Personality wise, not anything pertaining to the plot.)
See above re. blind acceptance of fate as impossible to change. I'm not sure whether I would change it, but if I would change anything, it would be that.

7) If you were in the fandom with this character, how do you see yourself interacting with him/her? (Would you get along well? Fall in love with? Dislike? Friendly rivalry? etc etc)
He'd probably try to joke me out of my shell. It would either work, or irritate the hell out of me. ;)

8) Does this character make the cut as one of your all time favorites (if you like) or most hated?
Since I'm not that deeply into the fandom, he's not going to crack the all-time favorites list, but he is one of my favorites in X.

9) Would you hype up this character (if you like) or warn about (if you dislike) to someone who's new to the fandom?
Sure, I'd recommend him as someone to keep an eye on.

10) Is this character popular with the fanbase?
Don't know the fandom well enough to say.

...aaaaand I broke the comment limit!

Kamui

1) What is your opinion of this character? If you like, explain why you like him/her. Likewise if you dislike the character.
Kamui was difficult for me to get a handle on. He went through a lot of personality changes as the story progressed -- and understandably so, but still. Overall, though, I'd say that I like him.

2) Is he/she important to the general plot?
Since he's the protagonist, I guess I'd have to say yes. :D

3) Can you relate to this character at all? Do they grip you emotionally?
I always find "kid must make choice on which the fate of the world rests" to resonate, even if it is common in these sorts of stories, so he works for me on that level. And I feel him on the loss of all the people he loves -- his monther, Kotori, Fuuma -- under such horrific circumstances.

4) How much do you like the fandom that this character comes from?
See above.

5) Do you ship this character with any other character? Or, are you particularly intrigued by their relationship with any other character(s)? (romance-wise or platonic)
Again with the canon, except in this case it's with Kotori. I see the appeal of shipping him with Fuuma -- love/hate/friendship/history all tangled up has all kinds of possibilities. I also like him with Yuzuriha (sp); I think they'd balance each other out.

6) Is there anything about the character you would change? (Personality wise, not anything pertaining to the plot.)
I can't think of anything. I can't see how changing anything wouldn't completely screw up the plot. He's just too key to everything that happens.

7) If you were in the fandom with this character, how do you see yourself interacting with him/her? (Would you get along well? Fall in love with? Dislike? Friendly rivalry? etc etc)
Hmm, I doubt we'd interact much -- I'm not so good at breaking through walls like his IRL.

8) Does this character make the cut as one of your all time favorites (if you like) or most hated?
Again with not being so much into the fandom. I like him, but I don't feel strongly enough about him as a character to call him a favorite.

9) Would you hype up this character (if you like) or warn about (if you dislike) to someone who's new to the fandom?
It would be hard to talk up the series without talking about him, so sure.

10) Is this character popular with the fanbase?
See above.

Kamui/Yuzuriha is certainly adorable in many ways, it just is never done in fandom. Which saddens me on several levels.

Personally I've never really seen the appeal of F/K, but it's the 2nd most popular pairing after S/K, so I keep it quiet lest I be smote. >__> I want Kamui to be emotionally well adjusted! Keiichi and Yuzu are much better for him. |D

Re: ...aaaaand I broke the comment limit!

[identity profile] owlmoose.livejournal.com 2007-12-11 08:17 am (UTC)(link)
It's all the levels to K/F, I think. They were friends, then rivals, now bitter enemies, and yet Kamui at least still has feeling for him. Since I don't have any emotional investment in K's personal happiness, I find the ship interesting, at least in theory

Now, if Kamui were a real person, I'd tell him to stay far, far away, go find a nice girl like Yuzu, or a nice boy like Keiichi if he prefers. ;)

Re: ...aaaaand I broke the comment limit!

[identity profile] parron.livejournal.com 2007-12-11 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
F/K is certainly a very interesting pairing, it's just kinda creepywrong at the same time -- Fuuma killed Kotori. Fuuma removed Subaru's eye. Fuuma did several absolutely traumatizing things to Kamui including attempting to crucify him with glass. For Kamui to then turn around and live with him happily ever after--even changed!Fuuma--that's kinda creepy to me.

Anyway, this is X, so Kamui clearly prefers guys. XD Keiichi it is. (Lately we've been joking around that he should end up with Arashi, because Kamui and Arashi are exactly alike in all the wrong ways, and would bitch at one another merrily for years.)

Re: ...aaaaand I broke the comment limit!

[identity profile] owlmoose.livejournal.com 2007-12-11 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Anyway, this is X, so Kamui clearly prefers guys

Clearly. Kotori, who's that? :P

Anyway, I totally see what you mean about the creepiness of K/F as a fluffy bunny pairing. I'd be all shocked and horrified that people write them that way, but since this is fandom I know better than to be surprised. ;) It's the whole difficulty of it, whether or not Fuuma is redeemed, that I would find interesting. But then again, my track record of liking pairings that would have difficulty with an easily-found happily ever after is well known. ;)

Re: ...aaaaand I broke the comment limit!

[identity profile] parron.livejournal.com 2007-12-11 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Kotori is completely disregarded, which kinda makes me sad. I mean, yes, she's dead so obviously Kamui won't end up with her, but he did canonically love her a lot. :/

But anyway. I don't mind pairings with problems to overcome - I still maintain that even with Sorata living past the end, Sorata/Arashi has a lot to get past before they can have anything close to happy and fluffy. It's just that I also think there is a limit. XD

Kamui and Fuuma could work things out, but there would be a ton of weirdness between them even so; since I adore Kamui so much, I want him to be happy without any weirdness. >D

Tidus

1) What is your opinion of this character? If you like, explain why you like him/her. Likewise if you dislike the character.
I like Tidus a lot and always have. He's a good kid who gets caught up in a situation that's much too big for him at first, and then once he finally thinks he has a handle on things, the rug is pulled out from under him. TWICE. And yet he bears it all with such determination and good cheer that I can't help but love him. He would've had every right to disappear into a puddle of emo, but he never did -- he just carried on, if anything more maturely than before, and that's awesome.

2) Is he/she important to the general plot?
Definitely. Yuna may be the "real" the main character of FFX, but it is Tidus's story, too (no matter how tired we may get of hearing him say it).

3) Can you relate to this character at all? Do they grip you emotionally?
Totally. I've moved around enough that I've been that stranger in a strange place where everyone magically expects you to understand and fit in. So I can feel that part of his character, a lot. I can't relate quite as much to the sunny, perky, jock-boy aspects, but there's enough other facets to his character that I still find him quite sympathetic.

4) How much do you like the fandom that this character comes from?
FFX is my favorite game of all time. And I consider FFX/X-2 my "home" fandom (although I realize most people consider FFX and FFX-2 to be separate fandoms, I can't separate them like that). I have my good days and my bad days, but in the end it's home and I still like it there.

5) Do you ship this character with any other character? Or, are you particularly intrigued by their relationship with any other character(s)? (romance-wise or platonic)
And here we go with canon again... Tidus/Yuna is a great pairing, and I enjoy them together, although I have mixed feelings about him coming back at the end of FFX-2. But if you're talking during FFX canon, yes, I ship them lots. I see interesting possibilities with Tidus/Rikku and Tidus/Gippal (crack though it may be) as well.

6) Is there anything about the character you would change? (Personality wise, not anything pertaining to the plot.)
Nope. I like him just as he is.

7) If you were in the fandom with this character, how do you see yourself interacting with him/her? (Would you get along well? Fall in love with? Dislike? Friendly rivalry? etc etc)
Here's where we get into trouble with the jock thing, because it's not a type I've ever spent much time with IRL and I don't know how easily we'd get past it. If we ever broke past that superficial level? I think we'd get on just fine.

8) Does this character make the cut as one of your all time favorites (if you like) or most hated?
Of all time? Probably not. He' fairly high up on my FFX list, although the problem with that list is that it's long -- I really like almost all the characters in FFX.

9) Would you hype up this character (if you like) or warn about (if you dislike) to someone who's new to the fandom?
I would and I have. I've defended him with all the points mentioned above, and will happily continue to do so.

10) Is this character popular with the fanbase?
He's pretty much love-him-or-hate-him. I think most people either adore him or think he's a whiny brat. (To which I say: imagine you're 17 and your home has been destroyed and you've been sucked 1000 years into the future and your father has turned into a giant sea monster who's terrorizing the world. How well adjusted are *you*?")

Akito

1) What is your opinion of this character? If you like, explain why you like him/her. Likewise if you dislike the character.
Not feeling the love, really. Nasty, manipulative, terribly selfish, doesn't explain her reasons for doing anything: these are all character traits that will push my buttons. And I don't really care that she has reasons for being that way; I still don't care for her.

2) Is he/she important to the general plot?
The larger plot arc, definitely yes.

3) Can you relate to this character at all? Do they grip you emotionally?
No and no. I can feel a bit sorry for her; that's all.

4) How much do you like the fandom that this character comes from?
Another fandom that I'm not really "in". The manga is great, though, and I'm looking forward to seeing how it ends.

5) Do you ship this character with any other character? Or, are you particularly intrigued by their relationship with any other character(s)? (romance-wise or platonic)
There are no characters in the story that I would wish her on. ;)

6) Is there anything about the character you would change? (Personality wise, not anything pertaining to the plot.)
Thinking a little about the feelings of others. Sharing her reasons for making her decisions rather than just making it all about "because I'm God and I SAY SO." (Although I suppose if anyone can get away with that, it's God. But still.)

7) If you were in the fandom with this character, how do you see yourself interacting with him/her? (Would you get along well? Fall in love with? Dislike? Friendly rivalry? etc etc)
I would stay far, far away. Or possibly give her a piece of my mind, although I probably wouldn't have the guts to go through with it.

8) Does this character make the cut as one of your all time favorites (if you like) or most hated?
She *might* crack most hated, depending on where the story goes. I don't know, though, it's hard for me to really despise a character, even one I dislike as much as this.

9) Would you hype up this character (if you like) or warn about (if you dislike) to someone who's new to the fandom?
I wouldn't dare -- too many spoilers if I did. ;)

10) Is this character popular with the fanbase?
Good question. I'm not really sure. I'd bet the revelation of her secret affected it, though!

Aaaaand now it's bedtime. I'll get to the last one tomorrow.

[identity profile] giandujabird.livejournal.com 2007-12-11 06:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, Akito. Cannot stand this character either. Then again, her mother Ren seems even more despicable! Brrrr...

I'm terribly tempted to enter another Furuba character. But who to choose? So many! Oh wait, how about Shigure?

[identity profile] owlmoose.livejournal.com 2007-12-12 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
Shigure

1) What is your opinion of this character? If you like, explain why you like him/her. Likewise if you dislike the character.
He amuses me and he intrigues me. He seems to have a lot more control over events than he lets on.

2) Is he/she important to the general plot?
On the surface, I'd say he doesn't seem all that important, but I wonder how much he's nudging things behind the scenes.

3) Can you relate to this character at all? Do they grip you emotionally?
Not really -- I don't know him well enough. He's been kept kind of a mystery as far as his feelings and motivations go.

4) How much do you like the fandom that this character comes from?
See above.

5) Do you ship this character with any other character? Or, are you particularly intrigued by their relationship with any other character(s)? (romance-wise or platonic)
Not particularly. I love his friendships with Hatori and Aaya, though. And his dynamic with Tohru is cute.

6) Is there anything about the character you would change? (Personality wise, not anything pertaining to the plot.)
I can't think of anything. Maybe being more open about his actions and his reasons for them.

7) If you were in the fandom with this character, how do you see yourself interacting with him/her? (Would you get along well? Fall in love with? Dislike? Friendly rivalry? etc etc)
I can't see developing a good or bad relationship with him, really.

8) Does this character make the cut as one of your all time favorites (if you like) or most hated?
No, I don't feel that strongly about him.

9) Would you hype up this character (if you like) or warn about (if you dislike) to someone who's new to the fandom?
Not particularly. I might suggest that you keep an eye on what he does, though -- maybe you can help me figure it out!

10) Is this character popular with the fanbase?
Don't know enough about the fandom to say.

[identity profile] parron.livejournal.com 2007-12-11 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I LOVE AKITO, GUYS. I REALLY DO.

If nothing else, she is so by far the most interesting character in Furuba to me. :D

I meant to ask, what did you think of the latest volume?

[identity profile] owlmoose.livejournal.com 2007-12-12 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
Quite good. I liked getting more of the Haru/Rin backstory. I'm not all that enamored of the student council plotline -- doesn't this story have enough going on, and enough characters to keep track of, without them? It almost feels like it was mostly stapled on to give Yuki a plausible love interest besides Tohru. Speaking of whom, I've been missing her, and also Kyo. (The little sketch of Kyo complaining about the two of them barely being in this volume really cracked me up.)

I'm definitely *curious* about Akito, but that doesn't mean I *like* her. ;)

[identity profile] parron.livejournal.com 2007-12-12 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
If I remember correctly, the series is going to slant back to Toru soon and stay there. But Takaya has said in interviews that she's always considered Toru and Yuki to be the two leads, which is why all the student council.

[identity profile] parron.livejournal.com 2007-12-12 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
Also, did you ever buy the fanbook THAT YOU TOTALLY SHOULD BECAUSE MY FRIEND DID IT?

There was a whole section of omake comics in the back; one of which was titled "If Kyo Had Read Furuba 16." Great stuff.

[identity profile] parron.livejournal.com 2007-12-11 07:58 am (UTC)(link)
PS: ALSO ARASHI. HOW CAN YOU TURN DOWN THIS ICON.

[identity profile] owlmoose.livejournal.com 2007-12-12 06:56 am (UTC)(link)
Arashi

1) What is your opinion of this character? If you like, explain why you like him/her. Likewise if you dislike the character.
I... can't decide how I feel about Arashi. I'm not sure why -- maybe because her character arc is so clearly not complete in the manga so far that I'm not sure what to make of her. She intrigues me, definitely, and given her "type", I feel like I *ought* to like her. I certainly don't dislike her. Maybe the problem is that she doesn't let anyone close enough to get to know her. Not even the reader, especially not someone whose only read the series through once. So... I dunno.

2) Is he/she important to the general plot?
Like Sorata, I'd say she's a significant secondary character. But if her arc goes where everyone thinks it will, she may become much more important.

3) Can you relate to this character at all? Do they grip you emotionally?
...Kind of? On an intellectual level, I can understand how she ended up closing herself off, I can understand why she's so weirded out by Sorata's devotion that comes out of nowhere at first. But it doesn't resonate with me emotionally at all. It's so different from how I deal with the world. Maybe that's part of why I'm so ambivalent about her.

4) How much do you like the fandom that this character comes from?
See above.

5) Do you ship this character with any other character? Or, are you particularly intrigued by their relationship with any other character(s)? (romance-wise or platonic)
Because it's so clear in the canon, I do 'ship her with Sorata. I also found the Arashi/Subaru manifesto pretty convincing. ;) I can't really see her with anyone else at all.

6) Is there anything about the character you would change? (Personality wise, not anything pertaining to the plot.)
Here is someone who needs to open up to *somebody*. Bottling all that in can't possibly be good for the soul.

7) If you were in the fandom with this character, how do you see yourself interacting with him/her? (Would you get along well? Fall in love with? Dislike? Friendly rivalry? etc etc)
As with Paine, if we both broke through the reserves, it would probably be really interesting to talk with her. On the other hand, I might get impatient with her.

8) Does this character make the cut as one of your all time favorites (if you like) or most hated?
No, not either way. I think I could grow to like her more if I got more familiar with the source, but I don't think she'd ever crack the all-time list.

9) Would you hype up this character (if you like) or warn about (if you dislike) to someone who's new to the fandom?
I don't expect I would, no.

10) Is this character popular with the fanbase?
Again, I don't know the fandom, but since she's a girl in a CLAMP series I'm theorizing probably not.... ;) But I could be wrong, and I'd be happy if I were.

[identity profile] muggy-mountain.livejournal.com 2007-12-11 11:31 am (UTC)(link)
I was hoping that someone else would beat me to Auron, because it's so predictable, but!

Auron.

Seymour, too.

Nothing wrong with predictable

[identity profile] owlmoose.livejournal.com 2007-12-12 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
Auron

1) What is your opinion of this character? If you like, explain why you like him/her. Likewise if you dislike the character.
Love him. Auron is my favorite character in the game, hands-down, and that's saying something because I like all the characters so well. I like him for all the reasons everyone else does: he's mysterious, he has an intriguing backstory, he's sexy, he gets all the best lines. He caught my attention right off, and I spent much of the rest of the game watching him, looking for more.

2) Is he/she important to the general plot?
Absolutely. Although it doesn't become clear until later, he's the driving force for a lot of the things that happen in the game.

3) Can you relate to this character at all? Do they grip you emotionally?
Does he ever. I find his tragedy, and his burning need to make everything right, very compelling. I can also relate to him as the "adult" -- even back when I first played, I was closer to him in age than to anyone else in the main party.

4) How much do you like the fandom that this character comes from?
See above re. FFX and the X/X-2 fandom.

5) Do you ship this character with any other character? Or, are you particularly intrigued by their relationship with any other character(s)? (romance-wise or platonic)
I am resistant to romantically 'shipping Auron with anyone. Before the game, he was an uptight member of the clergy; during the game, he has more important things on his mind. I see the appeal of Auron/Lulu and Auron/Braska and Auron/Jecht, but I wouldn't say that I really 'ship anyone. Auron/Nobody = OTP. ;)

Platonically, now, that's a whole other ballgame. I should probably have mentioned this in my Tidus comment, but I love the two of them together. Auron's not really like a father to Tidus -- I'd say he's more like an uncle, or a much older brother -- but it's still a great dynamic. The Auron-Braska-Jecht trio is also compelling, and of course I've written at length about the Auron-Kinoc friendship/rivalry. So although I don't 'ship him romantically with anyone, I find Auron's *platonic* relationships with other people some of the most interesting in the game.

6) Is there anything about the character you would change? (Personality wise, not anything pertaining to the plot.)
Not a thing.

7) If you were in the fandom with this character, how do you see yourself interacting with him/her? (Would you get along well? Fall in love with? Dislike? Friendly rivalry? etc etc)
I would probably look up to him with a great deal of respect and awe, and he probably wouldn't really notice my existence. ;)

8) Does this character make the cut as one of your all time favorites (if you like) or most hated?
On the all-time favorites list, definitely. Probably top ten, maybe top five.

9) Would you hype up this character (if you like) or warn about (if you dislike) to someone who's new to the fandom?
I'd talk him up, sure, although I doubt it would be necessary.

10) Is this character popular with the fanbase?
That would be a yes.

Re: Nothing wrong with predictable

[identity profile] muggy-mountain.livejournal.com 2007-12-12 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
You know, I was a little surprised to hear Auron is your favorite character. I would have guessed Paine, but that could be due to the timing of our meeting as you were writing more FFX2 at the time.

And I can totally understand the Auron/nobody OTP, despite all the evidence pointing to the contrary. Though now you've made me curious about your Jecht/Auron, if only because it's a pairing I've never really been able to catch.

Re: Nothing wrong with predictable

[identity profile] owlmoose.livejournal.com 2007-12-12 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
Auron is my favorite FFX character. Paine is my favorite X-2 character. If you put them head to head.... I really don't know who I would choose

re. evidence: I am often resistant to subtext in canon. unless you're talking about P/N So what other people see as evidence for a romantic relationship, I see as strong friendship. I could get on my soapbox now about how people devalue platonic relationships, especially in fandom, but I won't. ;)

Ah ha. I thought you were one of the FFX/X2-as-one-fandom/canon folks.

I could get on my soapbox now about how people devalue platonic relationships, especially in fandom, but I won't. ;)

I agree with you but I think you *should* get on your soapbox about it. Someday, anyway. You state things well and who knows, maybe it would inspire a spike of good gen friendship fics, at least in this small corner of fandom. We needs more of it, I think.

Oops.

[identity profile] muggy-mountain.livejournal.com 2007-12-12 04:39 am (UTC)(link)
The comment above was me if that wasn't obvious! :)

Re: Oops.

[identity profile] owlmoose.livejournal.com 2007-12-12 06:42 am (UTC)(link)
I do think of FFX and X-2 as a single canon, just as I would two books or movies of which one was the sequel to the other. But since my two favorite characters each only appear in one game, they each get to be my favorite for their own game. And now I think I've just nitpicked myself into a corner, so I'll stop now. ;)

I will consider that soapbox. The question is how to express the opinion without pissing off everyone in fandom....

Seymour

1) What is your opinion of this character? If you like, explain why you like him/her. Likewise if you dislike the character.
Eh. In terms of personality, I pretty much detested him on sight -- just like I was probably supposed to. Anyone who thinks destroying the village is the best way to save it will never be on my good side. As far as villains go, I'd say he's somewhere in the middle -- neither lame nor super compelling.

2) Is he/she important to the general plot?
As one of the primary antagonists, I'd have to say yes on this one.

3) Can you relate to this character at all? Do they grip you emotionally?
I can't relate to him at all (see above re. destruction of villages). He didn't really grab me on an emotional level, either; I feel bad for him, thanks to his backstory, but I can't find it in me to excuse his actions because of it.

4) How much do you like the fandom that this character comes from?
See above re. FFX and the X/X-2 fandom.

5) Do you ship this character with any other character? Or, are you particularly intrigued by their relationship with any other character(s)? (romance-wise or platonic)
Not really. He's too much of a sociopath for me to put into any kind of romantic relationship. I do wonder about his relationship with his parents, though.

6) Is there anything about the character you would change? (Personality wise, not anything pertaining to the plot.)
Tone down the megalomania, a lot. (And/or heal the insecurities that came from being an outcast from society.) I think the rest would probably follow.

7) If you were in the fandom with this character, how do you see yourself interacting with him/her? (Would you get along well? Fall in love with? Dislike? Friendly rivalry? etc etc)
I doubt we'd get along. I expect I'd stay as far away from him as possible.

8) Does this character make the cut as one of your all time favorites (if you like) or most hated?
I don't feel strongly enough about him for him to touch the most hated.

9) Would you hype up this character (if you like) or warn about (if you dislike) to someone who's new to the fandom?
Not particularly.

10) Is this character popular with the fanbase?
He has his devoted fans, but I wouldn't say he's popular. I wouldn't say he's widely hated either, though.

I was going to say Auron, but I'll say Paine instead (and Wakka, if you feel like it) ^_^

Paine

1) What is your opinion of this character? If you like, explain why you like him/her. Likewise if you dislike the character.
Loved her from the very beginning of the game, and still do. Why? Many of the same reasons as Auron, actually -- the mystery, the backstory, the lines. I want to know what's going on in her head. I like that she's tough but caring, blunt but secretive.

2) Is he/she important to the general plot?
Given that she's one of only three player characters and that her subplot turns out to be one of the main drivers of the game, I'd say she is.

3) Can you relate to this character at all? Do they grip you emotionally?
I can relate to her somewhat, since I've been the outsider many times in my life. Emotionally, definitely, and more so as we learned her backstory; the kind of betrayal she had to face was compelling to me.

4) How much do you like the fandom that this character comes from?
Although FFX was a better game than FFX-2, and ultimately it remains my favorite, I have a deep and abiding love for X-2, even with all its flaws. I wish it got more respect in the FF fandom and in fandom at large.

5) Do you ship this character with any other character? Or, are you particularly intrigued by their relationship with any other character(s)? (romance-wise or platonic)
Hmm, I wonder. ;)

No, okay, I'll state the obvious. Paine/Nooj is my OTP, not just of the FFX-2 fandom but of all fandoms. Not that I don't love other 'ships, I do, but this is the 'ship that claims the largest share of my attention and support. As for secondary pairings, I've also written Paine/Baralai, Paine/Rikku (but I can only ever see that as a fling), and Paine/Buddy. But I can only see her in other relationships if Nooj is somehow out of the picture. Platonically, I find Paine's relationships with her two groups of friends equally compelling. The bond between the CS4 is wonderful, and I love seeing them together both before and after the game. And YRP is an excellent group as well, although it's a very different dynamic.

6) Is there anything about the character you would change? (Personality wise, not anything pertaining to the plot.)
She'd probably be better off if she could open up to her friends a little more.

7) If you were in the fandom with this character, how do you see yourself interacting with him/her? (Would you get along well? Fall in love with? Dislike? Friendly rivalry? etc etc)
Good question. I think, assuming we could both break through our reserve and find things to talk about, that we'd get along well. But finding common ground might be a challenge.

8) Does this character make the cut as one of your all time favorites (if you like) or most hated?
Yes. Absolutely. Top ten for sure, possibly also top five.

9) Would you hype up this character (if you like) or warn about (if you dislike) to someone who's new to the fandom?
I am more than happy to talk up Paine and defend her.

10) Is this character popular with the fanbase?
Yes. She has her detractors, but overall I'd say she's fairly well liked. Ironically, I think people who played the game but didn't like it are more likely to be fond of her than people who loved the game.

Wakka

1) What is your opinion of this character? If you like, explain why you like him/her. Likewise if you dislike the character.
I like Wakka even if he is a jock and a religious fundamentalist. He's genuinely good-hearted; he just doesn't like change, and he likes to know who the good guys and the bad guys are. Which makes him basically a regular guy. I appreciate that about him.

2) Is he/she important to the general plot?
An important secondary character, I'd say. He's more there to react than to act.

3) Can you relate to this character at all? Do they grip you emotionally?
I can't relate to him much, but his emotional arc does grab me. Here's someone who's had to question every single thing he's ever believed, and how do you deal with that? It's interesting to see him face it and come out the other side.

4) How much do you like the fandom that this character comes from?
See above.

5) Do you ship this character with any other character? Or, are you particularly intrigued by their relationship with any other character(s)? (romance-wise or platonic)
I always liked the idea of Wakka/Rikku, from the first time I played the game. The idea of worlds colliding, and of Wakka being forced to face his prejudices on an even *more* personal level than he already was, intrigued me a lot, and I think they have a fun dynamic. I also liked the connection between Wakka and Lulu in FFX, which I saw as a younger brother-older sister relationship, and I wish we had seen more of how that evolved into romance between the games -- I think that would have been interesting.

6) Is there anything about the character you would change? (Personality wise, not anything pertaining to the plot.)
His stubbornness, if anything, although in some ways it also served him well.

7) If you were in the fandom with this character, how do you see yourself interacting with him/her? (Would you get along well? Fall in love with? Dislike? Friendly rivalry? etc etc)
Depends on whether we were on the same side of an issue. I could see enjoying his company and I could see getting really tired of arguing with him but not getting anywhere.

8) Does this character make the cut as one of your all time favorites (if you like) or most hated?
I like him, but I don't think he'd quite make the all-time list.

9) Would you hype up this character (if you like) or warn about (if you dislike) to someone who's new to the fandom?
I don't know that I'd hype him, but I wouldn't put him down either.

10) Is this character popular with the fanbase?
This varies a lot, I think. In certain segments, he's very popular; in others he's dismissed or disliked. Which is a shame, because I think most of his detractors take a fairly shallow view of him.
