You know... I admit I was thinking exactly that. I'll see what I can do. :) Do you usually generate yours randomly, or do you pick them?

It's all about the Party Shuffle, baby.

Although, I may toss a song or two out if I think it or the band is really obscure. Or not, because sometimes it's fun when someone actually gets it. But if it's so far out there I probably wouldn't get it myself, I might reject it. Sometimes I limited it so that it was only one song per band, but I've stopped doing that. And with iTunes 5.0 with "random" controls, it's not as necessary. My next meme will really have some variety.

I only handpick them for the theme section. Hmm, I'll have to see if I even have one of those close to ready now.

iTunes 5.0 random controls?

What are those, pray tell? (I downloaded the update recently but haven't played with it yet.)

Prefs->Playback "Smart Shuffle" "allows you to control how likely you are to hear multiple songs in a row by the same artist"

I have mine halfway between "random" and "less likely" and that's just about right. If you put it all the way to "more likely", you get whole albums just about, only with the songs in a different order.

I'll have to see if I even have one of those close to ready now.

I'll try to refrain from scooping you again. ;) My second theme meme became too impossible to finish.

One last tip. Keep a text file somewhere that's a list of all the songs you've ever used. After you make a few of them, you start to wonder if you haven't posted a lyric before. If you do it from the beginning, you don't have to dig back through old posts looking for all your memes.

*Bows* Thank you, sensei.

It's a pain to create a file like that after posting 5 or 6 of them, so start early!

Oh yeah, one last "one last tip": lyrics sites kill browsers. Lots of pop-up adds, etc. Some just plain cause them to freeze. Some are better than others, but you'll have to figure it out for yourself. Draft your meme in a text file and maybe even open a second flavor of browser just for lyrics. Then you can kill just that browser and not lose all your other open windows/tabs if you are that kind of person.

Also, if you put HTML comments in your LJ, they aren't visible with a View-Page Source...

I've recently found that sing365 tends to not kill my browser. Many others do.

I use Party Shuffle. I skip stuff that doesn't have words or if the band is too obscure. If the band is not obscure but the song is obscure, sometimes I'll pick a released single from the same band and use that instead - that's good for those one-hit-wonder artists who you bought the CD of for some silly reason. ;)

I'm actually working on this right now, and I'm rejecting a lot of things out of hand - just too much obscurity in my collection. My first one at least is going to be fine-tuned to be gettable (which of course means no one will get any of them ;) )

[identity profile] grue23.livejournal.com 2005-09-14 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
I often find myself surprised with what people do and don't get. Sometimes someone will know an artist really well and I'll have no idea. Sometimes people won't know an artist that I've been familiar with for 15 years and I am shocked they won't get one of their less popular songs. :)

I'll just answer "Dar Williams" to anything I don't know. :)
