Gameblogging update

Got to the beginning of Chapter 12 last night; spoilers through the opening scenes.

After so much running on rails, it was a real relief to get down to Pulse and have some time to breathe and run around and hunt Marks and admire the scenery. I'm a little sorry to see that the story seems to be getting back on said rails with the return to Cocoon. Endgame appears to be upon us.

A few thoughts, in no particular order:

That cutscene that opens Chapter 12: I think I need to watch that about a dozen more times. Partly because it's awesome, but also because it was fast and confusing, and I'm not at all sure what was going on. I miss the Sphere Theater.

The Primach as the Big Bad: not a bad twist, although relatively obvious on reflection. This is a Final Fantasy game, after all; eventually the government has to reveal itself as corrupt on some level. The twist with Raines, though, I didn't see coming at all, and I really felt the betrayal with the characters, especially Snow. Raines's arc as a whole is pretty tragic. This story is really mean to its characters.

Lightning/Fang/Vanille OT3: There is no other choice. When Fang and Vanille were reunited in Chapter 9, T -- who, I should add, is not in fandom and so hadn't heard any of the rumblings about them -- said "What, no kiss?" And I was already really digging Fang and Lightning together from their Awesome Commando Team Action in Chapter 7, so what else is there for me to do, really?

Random thought while talking with Renay about 'ships and the lack of slash pairings in the game: although the three male members of the main cast aren't particularly 'shippable with each other (do not speak to me of Snow/Hope; I know it's out there, but I'm pretending that I don't), if there aren't a dozen epics about Cid Raines and Colonel Rousch (sp?) and their doomed love by the end of the year, I'll eat my hat. I might even write one of them myself (except knowing me, it would probably be a doomed friendship, possibly with subtext). That said, it is way too early to tell if I will be drawn to this game in a fannish sense. With FFXII, it took three years and a replay before I felt really ready to write fic. It might happen with this game, it might not, we'll see. Let's get the game finished first...

The only slash pairing I've seen some activity for is Cid/Rydgea (sp?). This is the first FF for me where I have no slash ships but one het (Lightning/Hope) and one yuri (Vanille/Fang).

I can't ship Hope with anyone; he's just too young. Even if he does have a couple of really cute moments with Vanille... I *love* his big brother-big sister vibe with Lightning and Snow, but I don't see either of those relationships as shippy at all. (Lightning/Snow might be another story, except that it doesn't work canonically, and I'm far too fond of Snow/Serah to break that up.)

Personally, I would be happy to ship Rydgea with just about anyone. Cid, Snow, Lightning, Fang... it's all good. I agree that Cid seems the most likely though, at least at the point I've reached in the game.

With Hope, it's more of the 'when he turns 18' ship with Lightning for me.
Amen on Rydgea. He should have had tons more screentime though!

Ah, I can see that more, then. I'm the same way with Larsa/Penelo in FF12.

I would not argue with more Rydgea. >.>

I... ship Snow/Hope. >.> But I will likely never write anything more than unrequited (usually Hope getting his first boycrush) pre-slash for them until Hope is 18+. I can't really imagine Hope in a real ship until he's much older, especially not with Lightning and Snow, who just wouldn't do that. I also ship Lightning/Hope, but like Snow/Hope, I prefer it when Hope is 18+. However, as with Snow/Hope, I think exploring Hope's adolescent crushes on an unrequited level is cool. And I also ship Lightning/Snow, and luckily there's no age limits on that!

In truth, I ship everyone. Except for maybe Snow/Serah, but I don't not ship them. I'm just not interested. XD

I wish we had a theater where we could review those cutscenes, because I agree the Ch. 12 opening needs to be rewatched. For the same reasons you mentioned--it's both awesome and confusing. XD

I feel bad for Cid. And Rygdea. :S

Fang/Vanille is canon. I refuse to see it any other way. :D

Sorry if I came off too strongly there. >.> I don't mean to imply that other people shouldn't ship Hope with Snow, or anyone else, especially unrequited and/or aged up. But Hope/Snow (and Hope/Lightning, to a slightly lesser extent) hits my two personal biggest pairing squicks -- significant maturity gap between the characters, and incest (and of course it's not *literal* incest, but I read Hope's dynamic with Snow and Lightning both as more familial than anything). So I prefer not to seek it out. (I am very careful about what stories I read featuring Larsa for the same reason.)

I am finding myself very interested in Cid. How he became a l'Cie, what it was like for him to have to work against his own personal beliefs and public persona. His story is so tragic, up to and including its ending. I'm waiting for (and kind of dreading, but on the other hand hoping) Rygdea to reappear -- I hope we get some closure on him. (Currently slogging through the Chapter 13 dungeon.)

Hee on Fang/Vanille. They aren't exactly making that one subtle, are they?

Don't worry, you're the least of my problems when it comes to people opposing Hope pairings. I read a lot on off-LJ forums (I need to stop obsessively checking Gamespot), to see opinions and info on the game and tips, and the majority of snide remarks come from there. Most people on LJ are better behaved, but a few have made some unpleasant implications about Hope shippers. I absolutely can understand people not liking it or it hitting their squick buttons. I just kinda resent the bad press the Hope shippers are getting. I think I ship Lightning, Hope, and Snow in all ways mostly because of the quasi-familial angle. I guess I don't associate it as incestual since it's family by choice, like marriage? But I can understand the squick--just want to make sure you don't think we're all perverts or something.

Cid's story is super-tragic. I think exploring him is a fine venture. As is Cid/Rygdea. :D But I shall say nothing on Rygdea until you're done, though I think his fate has already been stated by now. Actually, I could go for Cid/Snow, too. :D Honestly, I'm shameless. If the fic's good, I swear, I'd read most anything except Snow/Serah, and even then, I might read it.

Fang/Vanille is so obvious that unless they start making out, they can't get any gayer. They're really cute together, too. Writing femslash or het is hard for me, because of the association of self (it makes me feel oddly vulnerable), but I definitely want to read the hopefully soon to come onslaught of fics for them!

I love Cid. Always.

And yes, shipping all the girls together.

As I said to [livejournal.com profile] imadra_blue, above, I am finding myself really strongly drawn to Cid and his story. To the point that I have already drafted 2,000 words of fic about him, and I haven't even finished the game yet. >.>
