A student asked me for advice about writing today, and I felt so glad to be able to speak from recent experience rather than dim memory. She was having trouble with a personal statement, which is just about the hardest kind of writing there is. I went in the "just put your thoughts down on paper (or rather, computer screen) and don't worry about whether they're any good -- you can always go back and edit them later" direction, and I think she found it really helpful. In such moments, I'm genuinely pleased to be doing what I do.
