1. What's the best thing about your job/career?

I get to shop for books with other people's money.

No, actually, that's the silly answer, although I have to confess that it's a pretty fun perk. The actual best thing about being a librarian is that I don't have to know everything, I just know how to find everything out. Knowledge is power.

2. What is the best candy on earth? (AKA, your favorite)

Ooh, that's hard. Because I have a serious sweet tooth. But I guess if I had to pick one, it would be the Maya Gold chocolate bar from Green & Black's. High-quality dark chocolate with orange and spices. Yum, yum.

3. What's your favorite TV show, either currently or of all time?

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Although Avatar: The Last Airbender is becoming a strong contender for that honor. Clearly, I like TV shows with colons in their titles.

4. Mixtape of your life -- what's the grand finale track?

Talking Heads, "This Must be the Place"

Because it's about being settled, and happy with the life you've made for yourself, and I can't think of a better way to wrap things up.

5. What's something you want more of in your fandom(s)?

In Final Fantasy, I would love to see a more active community. We go in boom and bust cycles, but overall it feels like things have really been slowing down over the last few years, and I would like to see more life in things like FYFF and the Kiss Battle.

As for my shiny new fandom, Dragon Age, I need to get out there and meet more people who are active in it. The community exists, so this is all on me, not the fandom. Partly this is due to being a game behind and therefore treading lightly to avoid spoilers, but hopefully I won't have that excuse for much longer! So at that point it will just be about getting over my nervousness about meeting new people.

So with you on number five. (I don't know if you've seen it before, but over on LJ there's a new FF challenge community, and it's really active and a lot of fun. It's one of the ones where you're sorted and such? I've met some cool people and the challenges are really fun. It's over at FF_Land.)

Yeah, I've been pretty wary of DA:2 spoilers myself, but I haven't played the hell out of Origins yet, so I've been waiting, but I'm totally going to have to play, if only because Fenris is voice by our favorite sky pirate.

And yes, I knew about Fenris's VA. Definitely an extra incentive to play. >.> I broke down and ordered DA2 a couple of days ago, so it should be waiting for me when I come back from my vacation next week... I guess he does a bunch of voices in Origins also, although I've never been able to pinpoint him there.

I agree with you on #5. Part of it for me is that I am not really into the later games, so when we get a boom cycle, it's usually for a new game. I'm not sure how to make the older fandoms more active again but I'd like to see some more activity there!

I have often talked with

renay about the difficulties of getting people excited about a fandom when there's been no new content for over a decade. But other fandoms seem to manage it, so I know it's possible. Something to ponder.

I wonder if a kind of "rewatch" would help? I know people play games at different paces but there are so many "let's play" series on YT, maybe someone should organize a rewatch of one of those + discussion? I know that rewind comms are really helpful for older TV show fandoms.

From my own experience, I know I get discouraged because of the low/no feedback issue. As much as I love revisiting FF8 and writing fic, sometimes it just doesn't feel worth the investment. I only have one review for my MegaFlare story from last year, for example, and that's kinda disheartening for 20k and months worth of work! I'm not sure how to fix that problem though but dwindling participation overall just makes it worse.

Believe me, I could have written that exact same paragraph about my own Mega Flare story -- I think it's one of the best I've ever written, over 200 hits on AO3, and yet only one review. :\ Final Fantasy has never been great for lots of feedback, at least not my corner of it, but I agree that it's gotten worse over the last couple of years. Many fixes have been proposed, but none of them have ever stuck. Follow through is hard.

So far, my solution has been to work on not caring about getting comments, since that's something I can actually control. It works better on some days than others. ;)
