Just a quick update

I got a layoff notice on Wednesday. My last day is September 25th.

I was informed this was coming on Monday, but I've seen it on the horizon for much, much longer: I'd say the writing’s been on the wall for at least a year, and the signs got clearer last spring. I’ve been preparing myself both mentally and financially, and I get pretty decent severance, so even if I don’t find something right away, I’ll be all right. It’s not what I wanted, but given how things have been going with the company that owns my school, it’s been too late for that for a long time now. Given the current situation, I think it’s for the best. I’m ready.

Yeah, from what you've said of your employers, it sounds like this was coming. (Or at least the overlords of your employers; I'd wager that your actual managers haven't been too happy about this. They hardly ever are, in my experience. :/)

I'm glad that you had time to prepare for this, and that you've got decent resources to help you through it, at least. Good luck finding something new!

Definitely true -- local management and administration is really unhappy with this state of affairs, and just as powerless as I am to actually do anything about it. I feel bad for them, although that's muted a little by the "somebody else's problem" field I can feel forming around myself.

All around, it sounds like a mess for local management and administration although I completely understand your SEP field regarding the matter.

I'm glad they've given you a good severance and my fingers are crossed that something far better presents itself to you very soon.

Anyway, thanks! The SEP is partly real and partly a defense mechanism, because when I start thinking about what I would have to do to make the new situation work, I start getting stressed and outraged. As good a sign as any that I am, indeed, ready to accept this change.

Thanks. Yeah, it does make it a lot easier to be prepared -- I think a few of the others were blindsided, and I can't even imagine how that would feel. As I told one of the faculty the other day, part of the reason I've been able to be so calm about the whole thing is that I got my anger out of my system earlier, raging at some of the other stupid changes they've made. Been there, done that, ready to move on.

My cats aren't the "come give you snuggles when you're feeling down" kind -- they operate on their own whims. But fortunately, they have the urge often enough regardless. :)

Ugh, so sorry to hear this. :( I hope you're able to find something quickly! Hunting for librarian jobs is never a good time, in my experience, but hopefully you're due a relatively painless process.

It's true, library jobs aren't exactly lying around on the ground, waiting for us to pick them up. But there are positions out there, and I'm fortunate that I don't have to grab the first thing that comes along. I do hope to get into a larger, more traditional institution -- I was talking today with a colleague about how I've never really worked with a team of librarians, and it would be nice to have that kind of community in my workplace. (Of course, I could be totally romanticizing the idea. ;) )

Ha ha, I've only ever worked at large institutions, so I occasionally romanticize the idea of the lone librarian who gets to do things without navigating the maze of toes waiting to be stepped on. :) It really is nice having folks around to collaborate with, though.
