Today has been a good day

Not just because the president was re-elected, although this is, in my view, a very good thing. But so many other things have made me happy: the first out lesbian elected to the Senate, the first Asian-American woman in the Senate, a disabled female veteran going to the House of Representatives, New York state sending its first Asian woman to the house of representatives, two men who said idiotic things about rape losing their Senate races, two states legalizing pot, same sex marriage legalized in two states (Maine and Maryland) and probably also a third (Washington), and for the first time ever, it looks like voters will be rejecting an anti-marriage equality amendment to a state constitution, in Minnesota.

We are making history here, and making our voices heard. And it is awesome. If Proposition 30 passes (and at last count it was trending upward), my night will be complete. (Although I would have liked to see California ban the death penalty. But it's too popular here; it was never going to happen. I'll content myself with raising a bunch of money for education.)

I saw! Fantastic news. :) Too bad we couldn't also scrap the death penalty, but that was never going to happen. At least the Three Strikes thing passed.

In addition to all these glorious things, I am also delighted that Linda McMahon has badly lost an expensive senate bid yet again here in Connecticut. All told, A PRETTY EXCELLENT NIGHT.

I have to admit, it was fun being in a swing state this time around. And by fun I mean "Oh good god I think I might puke".

I've never voted in a swing state (went to college in Pennsylvania but always voted absentee in California), but I can imagine. :\ You must be glad it's over!

I've lived in Illinois, Georgia, and California. This time, living in Iowa, it was rather interesting.

Where in Iowa? If you don't mind saying, at least in general terms. I'm sort of an Iowan -- grew up there, from age 3 to 13, in various tiny towns that you've probably never heard of. :)

I don't mind. I'm in Clinton in the Quad Cities area, actually which is... well. A thing. I'm originally from the Chicagoland area (from birth until age 20) so it is nice to only be about 2.5 hours away from my family. Do you mind if I ask where you're from, at least in general terms, though I probably won't know where it is?

I know the Quad Cities a bit -- the town I lived longer was Oakville, about 50 miles south of Davenport. You might have heard of it because it was wiped out in the 2007 floods, and the efforts to rebuild it have been in the news a little.

Although after the stress and exhaustion, I am really thinking Balthier is right and that maybe we should just decide our leaders with glowing rocks.

It might make more sense than the electoral college, that's for sure.

I am very glad that it looks like Obama is taking the popular vote after all -- it would have been very uncomfortable to be grateful to the EC.
