Doctor Who update
I have now finished through the third series.
I am enjoying David Tennant's Doctor very much, although I think Nine is still my favorite. I also liked Nine's relationship with Rose better somehow, even if their separation at the end of Series 2 was one of the most heart-wrenching moments ever. I do like how the post Bad-Wolf Rose becomes stronger, more likely to stand up for herself, and I hope we get to see her again, even if just briefly.
I've only had the one episode with Donna so far, but she was fantastic, and I'm so excited that she will be coming back. Martha.... I have mixed feelings about Martha. I think I would love everything about her, except for the fact that she got this huge crush on the Doctor, based on one kiss that he made clear was entirely for tactical reasons, and this is such a defining aspect of her character, along with the constant competition with the ghost of Rose. I do like that she knew when it was time to leave, and that she was honest with him about why -- and despite all her complaining about being in love with someone who didn't look twice at her, I think he was very aware of her feelings and just did a poor job of letting her down easily and helping the relationship transition into a shared friendly affection instead, most likely because he's still broken-hearted over Rose.
Please tell me that Donna does not fall in love with the Doctor -- another season of this unrequited love stuff might do me in.
The Master arc was pretty interesting. As soon as I saw the pocket watch, I realized who the Professor was, and I thought that was handled pretty well. I have a hard time believing that the Master is really, truly dead for good -- you don't just kill of a series's iconic villain in a single plot line -- but for the emotional purposes of the story, all that matters is that the Doctor believes it. His best frenemy and the only other Time Lord is dead and gone, and he falls apart. Much more visibly than when he lost Rose -- that seemed like a quieter grief to me -- probably because the Master's death also symbolizes the loss of Gallifrey, which I suspect he has never allowed himself to properly mourn. The fallout from all this, plus Martha and Jack both leaving him right after, should be interesting, and I hope they don't just ignore it.
So I've been wondering: where does Torchwood (the series, not the agency) fit in with the continuity? Should I watch it next? Should I have watched it already? Or does it matter?

Chronologically, series 1 of Torchwood takes place between series 2 & 3 of Who, so you should have watched it already (sorry!). Mostly this isn't a big deal as it doesn't reference DW much beyond Jack making a few cryptic references to the Doctor & IIRC the Doctor's hand is spotted, & at the end of the series we hear the TARDIS sound & Jack runs off toward it, tying into Utopia where he hitches a ride. Though you do miss out on the impact of a bit in TW episode 1, where Jack gets shot in the head - at that point nobody knew about the 'cannot die' thing (we saw him revived by Rose, but there was no indication it was anything more than a one-off) so it was a huge shock to see him apparently being killed off, & then suddenly standing up again. TW Series 2 takes place immediately after DW series 3 (with the team wondering where the fuck Jack has pissed off to because he went gallivanting off with the Doctor without saying anything.
TW series 1 is so-so, but I found it enjoyable enough other than wanting to smack Gwen (if you do dislike it too much to keep watching though, I urge you to at least watch They Keep Killing Suzy, which is genuinely creepy & manages to send chills down your spine with a single line, & only needs you to have watched the first episode). Series 2 is better, though let down by a few off moments. I stopped after that though - firstly didn't really like the idea of 5 episodes following a single story & then compounded by a major spoiler that made me go 'oh fuck no!'.
Mercifully Donna does NOT fall in love with the Doctor. NGL though my pleasure at this was slightly tempered by my suspicion that this was only because the writers couldn't bring themselves to pair someone not conventionally attractive with the Doctor. Still I'll take what I can get. Really fucking hate what happens to her at the end though (I realise that sounds spoiler-y, but they drop constant 'DOOM! DOOM! YOU ARE DOOOOOMED!' hints in practically every bloody episode) & I swear RTD did it out of some sort of spite before he handed over to Moffat.

It was always very clear to me that Rose's feelings for the Doctor were mutual, if not overtly stated, and that she knew on some level, so I never really read their relationship that way. Agreed regarding her treatment of Mickey, though. I know a little bit about what happens to Donna, from fandom osmosis, but I'd still prefer not to have even vague and foreshadowed spoilers (except for when I ask specific questions as I did in the entry) just in case I'm wrong about what I think I know.
