More Mass Effect thoughts
Having never played this game before, it's hard to say how far in I might be. We've played 30-some hours, with sidequests as preferential to main-line quests, but we've also finished several of the major missions as well. Maybe we're nearing endgame? The only main plot quest I've triggered that we haven't done yet is Virmire... and I'm spoiled enough that I don't want to go to Virmire. Not until I absolutely have to.
Also it turns out that the Bring Down the Sky DLC mission, mentioned by a couple of people on my last post, is included in the game already, which is nice. I like it when old games come with extras. :) We played through that this evening and found it fun.
Finally getting to know the characters better, and it's enjoyable. We've done personal missions for Wrex and Garrus -- do the other characters have them? -- and gotten interesting insights on both of them. There's a lot more to Wrex than meets the eye, and Garrus... well, can it be ME2 now please? They don't always see eye to eye, in fact they argued on his loyalty mission because Jane wanted to take the evil doctor in to face justice rather than killing him outright, but I like that. And it was gratifying when he came around to see it her way.
As for characters that actually are romanceable in this game, we let Liara down easy and kept flirting with Kaidan, but so far their entire relationship has taken the form of a mutual "I think you're really awesome but there are regs about this sort of thing so let's save it until after the mission is over" thing, which is not what I was hoping for. T is particularly underwhelmed (and it's not the guy thing, he enjoyed playing out the romantic storyline with Alistair in DA:O), to the point where I wonder if we ought to have gone for Liara instead. I do like Kaidan, I find the character and the backstory interesting, but as a romance it hasn't been super-satisfying so far. But who knows, maybe things will change. (Or maybe I made a mistake somewhere, and we'll just have to wait for ME2 to get a good romance going. Which, considering the above, might not be the end of the world.)
I like all the team, really, although I don't feel like I know Tali or Liara quite as well. Ashley, now, is a fascinating character. Her backstory is great -- her family history, her close relationship with her sisters and her dad, the way she puts herself out there because she has something to prove, but she's not going to dance around her opinions, either (her religious faith, her qualms about the aliens). I don't know if I would like her if I knew her in real life, but I sure appreciate her as a character. And I like the idea that she's out there with my fem!Shep, kicking ass as sisters in arms, even though they don't always agree on everything.
Yeah. I really don't want to go to Virmire. :-\
I may have rolled my Jane as a little too much of a goody two-shoes: she might have a dozen Renegade points, maybe, and her Paragon meter is overflowing. She's believer in the system, in human-alien cooperation, and in protecting life whenever she can -- she saved the Rachni queen, protected the colonists on Feros (we had to kill a few of them when we ran out of stun grenades and she felt like a total failure), and always, always tries negotiation first. Then again, this is a Bioware game, so I assume she'll have to compromise that position many, many more times in the hours still to come.

Any thoughts? How much of a reco do you give the series so far, based on 30 hrs of play time?

Garrus got better for me in ME2. I liked him in the first game, but he was too malleable, I guess? He had more of his own personality in the second game, and it worked for me.
And yay, love for Ashley. :D So many people dislike her, and she's one of my favorites, for pretty much exactly those reasons. I'm still disappointed that I can't romance her with a ladyShep without modding the game.

That's a good point regarding Garrus. I wonder now if a renegade Shep would also easily sway him to her way of thinking.

We started with paragon mShep and Renegade femShep, but that reversed at some point, and now I am way attached to our paragon femShep and not so interested in our mShep.
...someday I should play this game for myself instead of making paladin shoot all the things.
