Friday night plans: denied!

I had made plans to go see Brokeback Mountain with S tonight. The movie is out today, but in very, very limited release -- just New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco, and it's in only one theater here. There didn't seem to be any way to get tickets online, so I went there at 2pm in hopes of picking some up. No dice. Every single showing was sold out, except for a couple in the middle of the afternoon. S couldn't skip out on work that early, so we were out of luck.

Next weekend, with luck. Given this, I can only hope it will be playing in more theaters.

I'd never heard of it until today, now I can't wait to see it!

S has been dying to see it for ages. I mostly want to go because I love Ang Lee so very much. Have you seen "The Wedding Banquet"? If not, you should; I bet you would really like it.

From the reviews I have read, this sounds like a thoroughly conventional love story save for the fact the lovers are both male. I have a feeling it is a 'first step' film which is tentatively advancing into the mainstream with a gently non-offensive to the easily scared introduction to what was once called 'the love that dare not speak its name'. I am eager to hear your take on the film since I suspect you will have a clear and unbiased opinion.

Certainly could be. If so, it is a very important first step I think. Imagine a world where cliche-ridden trashy romance novels and mindless chick flicks could feature same-sex couples with no one batting a eye!

I hope so. :) Maybe not, though, because I adore Ang Lee beyond all reason, so I am predisposed to like his movies. I have to admit that my expectations for this film are rather inflated; I hope it's not a let down.

Oooh, if you're going next weekend maybe I can make it.
