What am I playing Wednesday? Persona 5

Every week, [personal profile] lassarina opens a post for people to talk about their current gaming projects. I'm going to steal a page from her book for today's post to talk about my current main game: Persona 5.

I've not played any of the other games in the Persona series. No good reason; I just never got around to them, and T had never been particularly interested. But after we finished Mass Effect: Andromeda, we were looking around for another game to play together, and as we were looking at recent-ish games that suit both our tastes and were well-reviewd, we came across Persona 5. I mentioned that I'd heard good things about it, and that I'd meant to check out the series, and we decided to give it a shot. We got to a slow start with it, mostly because it spends a whole lot of hours on rails at the start. But once you finish the first palace, the world starts opening up a bit (despite frequent and heavy-handed hints that you really out to get on with the main plot already), and we started enjoying it much more. Right now, we're working on the third palace, and the game says we're around 16% complete.

The game was advertised to me as a JRPG with dating sim elements. Since I've never really played a dating sim (though some people would argue that most Bioware games ought to count), it's hard to say how much it lives up to that aspect, but it definitely has the feel of a quality JRPG. And it's clear that maintaining social relationships is important, and will become more important over time. Getting to know the other characters helps a great deal in battles, and having those connections also makes the game more interesting in my head. Whether any of this will lead to romance is anyone's guess, but I'm also fine if it doesn't. So far, there haven't been any real branch points. The plot and the relationship growth are both quite linear; it seems as though the only real choice you get to make is how quickly to advance them all along what look to be pre-set paths. Many of the dialogue options feel like false choices, saying the same thing in different ways for flavor. But it's certainly possible that we'll see potential divergences later.

The character Yusuke is voiced by Matthew Mercer, which is both appealing and distracting. I recognized his voice immediately, of course. (Apparently Orion Acaba does some voices as well, but I haven't run across him as far as I've noticed.) I don't really know any of the other VAs -- my knowledge of American voice actors who dub Japanese games and anime is somewhat limited, outside of Final Fantasy.

I'm glad we gave it a try, and I'm glad it's become engaging enough that T is into playing it (always a risk when we pick up a game together). I'm sure I'll have more to say once the story comes clearer and we get further along.

I'll be watching your posts about this because the inclusion of a couple of nasty gay stereotypes put us off buying this game, even though we've loved all the previous Persona games. It was just very disheartening to hear about when Persona 4, with canon genderqueer character and pretty much canon gay boy, felt like so much progress.

I can only speak for halfway through the fifth palace, but the one I've seen (which is admittedly very nasty) has been on screen for approximately a total of 60 seconds across two occurrences, so I've been able to mostly shove it off to the side, though I agree in part about P4 (and also disagree in part because of the way the genderqueer and gay boy characters resolved that wasn't....as promising as where it started, IMO.)

The flavor is actually very important in the choices; in P3 and 4, at least, some choices could immediately break a relationship. I haven't looked to see if that's the case with 5.
