Ocean's Eight: Quick thoughts, mostly squeeing

I have long been a fan of the George Clooney Danny Ocean movies, because they're fun and charming and stylish with great casts, and I enjoy a good heist flick. Still, despite a few good female characters here and there, those movies are super dude-heavy, so when Ocean's Eight was announced -- like a Danny Ocean story, but with ladies -- I was thrilled. And all the trailers and promo materials looked good enough that I was pretty hyped for this movie. And it did not disappoint. Like the other films in this series, it has its flaws, but it was fun and charming and stylish with a great cast, and what else do I need from a lightweight heist flick?

Some things I particularly liked: Cate Blanchett, and Cate Blanchett's wardrobe. Awkwafina's comedic timing is fantastic. All of the relationships between all of the women were wonderful -- clearly these roles were cast for chemistry, and it just works, both one-on-one and as a group. Debbie and Lou, particularly, and if they aren't either currently or formerly in a romantic relationship (my money is on the latter), I'll eat every hat I own. Every single thing about Anne Hathaway's performance. The commentary, both overt and subtle, on women and celebrity. The nods to the other films in the series: a few, not too many, I think just the right amount. How much fun it was to see women being competent and working together, with very little attention paid to men and essentially no romance subplot (unless you count Debbie and Lou, which... okay, no, but seriously, the vibe there is not subtle).

If you were looking forward to it, go see it. You already know if it's for you. I hope you have as much fun as I did. I look forward to randomly stumbling across this movie on cable TV and dropping everything to watch it for years to come.
