Mega Marvel Rewatch II: The Rewatchening: Phase 3, Part 1
As I mentioned in my last post, we marathoned Guardians 2, Civil War, and Black Panther in one day, and followed up with Spider-Man: Homecoming. Thoughts on each:
Guardians 2: I've never been terribly fond of this movie -- it's funny, but spends more time punching me in the face than the first one, and I've talked before about the themes of abuse, some of which are handled better than others. The rest of the group liked it better than I did (in particular, they tend to be more sympathetic to Drax than I am), but no one ranks it as a particular favorite. I do think it was good to watch it in closer proximity to the first -- when I first saw GotG 2, I was surprised at how little the characters and their relationships had grown, and it works a lot better when you realize that that only a few months have passed. My favorite part is still the sister relationship, and I hope that gets more play in Endgame.
Civil War: Oh, movie that makes less sense every time I watch it. I mean, I am able to defend almost every specific decision everyone makes, and yet somehow the whole doesn't quite hang together. I don't really want to rehash the whole thing again here (I'm on Team Everyone is Right and Everyone is Wrong), but it was certainly the film that caused the most debate, both before and after. One thing I did notice that I don't remember ever thinking about before: did T'Challa sign the Sokovia Accords? He certainly doesn't behave as though he had. Then again, the UN does take him into custody with the others, although he's quite quickly released. As a king of a sovereign nation, does he have immunity? Even if he does, it seems rather hypocritical of him and T'Chaka, to be powered people who push for control of powered people but refuse to be bound by that control themselves. Now I'm also wondering whether Peter Parker signed the Accords. It's not as though the Accords only apply to the Avengers, because in Agents of SHIELD it's mentioned that Daisy has to sign them.
Black Panther: Nothing new to say, really. Such a great movie.
Spider-Man: Homecoming: I suggested that we skip this one to save time because it doesn't really contribute to the overall lore, but most of our group had never seen it, and I'm always happy to watch it again. So we did, last night. For the most part the others found it as delightful as I do. We did have a bit of a debate about the continuity error introduced by the "8 years later" title card; we all agreed that it doesn't make sense, and it turns out that Marvel agrees. I'm so looking forward to the sequel this summer.
Our plans going forward are to watch Ant-Man & the Wasp, the final battle of Doctor Strange (so we can see the Time Stone in action), and Ragnarok on Sunday, then cap it all off with Infinity War next Tuesday night. And that will catch us up! (Except for seeing Captain Marvel again, which I may try to do on Easter weekend.) I can't believe we're almost done.
