Catching up on the MCU, revisited
Because making lists of Marvel movies is apparently what I do now, I've decided to revist my recommendations for watching or rewatching movies to prepare for Avengers: Endgame, now that I've actually seen Endgame. There are a few crucial changes (some additions and deletions, some reordering).
I've done my best to keep the below free of Endgame spoilers, although you might be able to infer some vague things from what I've included and omitted. Like last time, I've also created a Google Doc.
How you should approach this project depends on how much you've already seen. If you're starting from scratch, you should really watch the Recommended movies and at least familiarize yourself with the characters from the Optional films. If you've seen all or most of them and just want to refresh your memory, the Required titles should be enough, although you might want to read (or even better, watch) some plot summaries. As before, whether or not I recommend a film has no bearing at all on its quality or how much I like it, just how closely its events and characters tie into Infinity War and Endgame, and how confused you might be if you aren't familiar with it.
Note that, unlike last time, I didn't put any of the TV shows on the list. But if you haven't seen it, I'd recommended watching at least the premiere and final episode of Agent Carter, Season One. (And really you should just watch both series anyway.)
And now, without further ado: the list!
For the most part, this is in-universe chronological order, with a couple of exceptions. I like putting Iron Man first even though two movies are chronologically before it, because it's the first MCU movie and sets the tone in so many ways. I prefer putting a little space between the two Guardians of the Galaxy films because I find its brand of humor a little wearying. And I don't think Captain Marvel would make much sense without the context of the films that came before it. But as always, your mileage may vary.
I welcome other people's feedback and suggestions! And I promise, this is the last of these for awhile. I assume.
