Photo project
Our little photo scanner came today, and it's pretty great. Scans at 300 dpi go really fast! At this rate, I'll have the files at least in not so much time at all.
But I am so far not perfectly pleased with Google Photos as a choice for hosting the images. I like that it's super easy to upload, and I like that it's free. But I'm annoyed as heck at the face matching. It took a lot of finagling to get it to work at all, it's very slow to run, it's not terribly good at matching older and younger versions of people (it did recognize my middle brother as both a 3rd grader and a 20-something, but it missed my aunt as a teenager and today), getting it remove bad matches is not at all intuitive, and the worst thing is that you can't tag people by hand. When I did a similar project for my friend Jed, I used the Mac Photos app, and while it has its quirks, its face matching algorithm was excellent, *and* you can tag pretty much any face you want (and even some you might not want). But the downside is I'm not sure how well album sharing works, especially for people who don't have Macs, and the whole point of this exercise is to share the photos with family members both near and distant. (One of my goals is to have something ready to share for a family reunion that my parents are attending next summer.) So I'll probably stick with Google for now, but I might do some research to find if there's a reasonably priced alternative.
