Travels suspended

Folks have probably seen by now that WisCon 44 has officially been canceled.

While heartbreaking, it was also inevitable, especially given that Wisconsin banned larger gatherings a couple of weeks ago and a Safer-at-Home order went into effect today.

Although I can't share any details yet (I'm actually on the ConCom this year), I can say that planning for virtual events is already in full swing, and I hope there will be announcements soon.

Also cancelled is my college reunion. I've gotta say, that one stings even more. There will be virtual events around that event as well, but it just won't be the same. There's a WisCon every year; I'll only have a 25th reunion once. But we will all survive, and hope to see each other in 2021.

Once again, this was the year I was going to get there. I had plans to meet up with someone and to take my kid on a college visit to UW Madison. FUCK this year.

oh NO that sucks, I am so, so sorry. I hope you find a way to make it work in another year.

Wiscon and my college reunion are often, but not always, on the same weekend; I felt so fortunate that I would be able to do both this year. Unfortunately next year I will most likely have to choose, and I expect I'll choose reunion.

I'm so sorry about the reunion. There was a virtual Stepsing on Zoom last Sunday that I heard about last minute -- I'm not even sure what the occasion was, unless to mark a premature end of the school year -- so I hope the reunion committees will scramble to do something similar to let people connect whole apart .

The virtual Step Sing was organized by a friend of mine! It wasn't tied to any particular traditional occasion -- I believe the idea was to give Mawrters an opportunity to connect in a scary and isolating time. Unfortunately, I couldn't join, but I understand the next one is on May Day, which should be nice.

The Alumnae Association will definitely be doing some virtual events and possibly some regional in-person events later in the year, if conditions allow. 0 and 5 classes will also be invited to campus in some form next year, although how formal a reunion that will be is unclear.

For some reason, people missing their 25th and 50th seems sadder than me missing my 30th.

Yeah. If my 20th had been cancelled, I've have been bummed, but something about it being one of the two big ones is a harsher blow.

BayCon has been postponed to the first weekend in November. I guess that makes it a 2-day con rather than a 3-day, but at least it's something.

I'm sorry about WisCon. It all sucks.

Thanks. Yeah, it does. I'm glad we were able to have FogCon, though. Imagine, just a weekend later and we probably couldn't (and shouldn't) have done it.
