The Legend of Vox Machina is finally here!
As a Kickstarter backer, I was able to watch a preview stream of the first two episodes today. Early reaction: a good start, and I see them laying the groundwork for the magic that I know this team is capable of producing.
As soon as I saw that David Tennant had been cast to play General Krieg, I knew which pre-stream story they'd be starting off with, and it's an excellent choice: it's fun, fairly self-contained but also sets up the Chroma Conclave, and gave Vox Machina a chance to show off their brilliant teamwork. True, they go from a team of doofuses who have a hard time working together to a well-oiled machine a little too quickly, but its better than the alternatives -- either their camaraderie is too strong out the gate and has nowhere to go, or they're a bunch of bumbling jerks for far too long than would be entertaining. These two episodes hit a good balance on that, I think. I'm glad they were able to get Kima, Allura, and Gilmore into the story right away (even if Gilmore felt a little shoehorned in), and the introduction of the Briarwoods was pitch perfect. One last favorite small thing: Matt is performing the voice of Trinket, and it warms my heart. He gets to be a member of Vox Machina!
I'm so glad this show will soon be a thing that's out in the world for everyone to see -- both for its own sake, and to provide a more accessible introduction to this troupe of creators than thousands of hours of unedited actual play VOD. Even if, ultimately, I suspect I will prefer the original, I'm so excited for this interpretation and to see how they'll make it work.
