Adult supervision

My boss is out of town for a conference for a few days. This makes me senior staff and, therefore, in charge of the library. A little daunting, although it's working out so far. Today is the tough one -- the assistant librarian doesn't work on Fridays, so I have to open *and* close. Which means that I got here at 7:45 AM and won't get out of here until after 7:00 PM. Fortunately I was able to knock off a little early yesterday, and I took a longish lunch (met T and S at this funky vegan Japanese restaurant, which was tasty if a bit odd), but it's a long day however you slice it. Hence, the LJ break.

One of the student workers today claimed that I have a bubbly personality. When I expressed surprise, she backed off to "friendly", which I can certainly agree with, especially in my "public service worker" persona, but bubbly? Not how I would describe myself. Not even vaguely.

In other news, I am finding this drabble thing completely addictive. It's not easy to craft a story with beginning, middle, and end in just 100 words, but it's fun, and once I get rolling on an idea it goes so quickly. I tend to ramble in my writing, as well as often using overly complex sentence structures, so being forced to tighten my prose to such an extent is a fascinating exercise, and worthwhile I think. I do suspect, however, that it's a lot easier with fanfic than it would be with original fiction, because the characters, and often times backstory, setting, etc., are already established.

"Bubbly"? Not the first word I would have chosen, I think. "Witty", "inventive", "playful", "quick", "brilliant" - there are lots of words which fit you - but 'bubbly'? Maybe you are effervescent in person, could that be it? I know you only through the words you offer so maybe you froth and foam when actually seen.

I see we are both doing exercises in our prose. With all the serious effort we are expending, I am not surprised we feel the need for short essays into the world of writing. It can only do us good. ;)

I really don't think so, but I suppose anything is possible. We so rarely see ourselves as others see us.

I think you're right about needing a break from serious effort. Also, the payoff on what we're doing is so long term. The three drabbles I wrote each took me between half an hour and two hours from conception to completion -- near-instant gratification. That's pretty satisfying.

I've never seen you at work, but I have seen you when you were happy/excited. In those situations, I'd probably describe you as being friendly, outgoing, enthusiastic, ??? Combine those, and I can see how they would seem bubbly.

Ah, yes, I see someone else used playful. That's a component, too.

Yeah, I suppose I can see all that. And I wouldn't say that I'm happy and/or excited at work *all* the time, but it's the face I try to present whenever possible. Especially when dealing with students, which I hope makes me more approachable.

I do wonder sometimes if it's really "professional" though. It's certainly not very "businesslike", which is okay in a school setting but it might cause trouble on the administrative side of things.
