Drabble request five

I wrote two for this prompt and couldn't decide between them, so you get them both. This closes out all open requests; any other takers?

Fandom: FFX-2
Rating: PG
Set: Postgame, no good ending
Spoilers: Implied, for the "regular" ending
Pairings: Baralai/Yuna
Prompt: Baralai and Yuna in a romantic relationship. For [livejournal.com profile] hinikuish.
Notes: Each story is 100 words. I have always been a big fan of this paring, so any excuse to write about it is more than welcome. ;) "Better" is inspired by an older ficlet of mine, Can't Ask For More.

Her Reasons

"Thank you for accepting my invitation." Baralai poured Yuna some wine. "May I ask what changed your mind?"

"To be honest? I've been thinking about you lately."

Surprised into silence by this frank admission, Baralai put down the bottle and stared.

"I'm like Spira." She rose from her chair and made her way to the Praetor's side. "Caught in an endless cycle, spiraling through the past. It's time to find my future." She took his graceful hand. "And I want you in it."

Without any further thought or hesitation he slid his free hand into her hair and kissed her.

------

Better

Baralai laid gentle hands on Yuna's shoulders as she gazed over the ruins. "I know that I can never be what he was to you."

"Maybe not," she admitted. "He was my first love, after all." She stepped backwards, leaning into his chest for a moment, then turned to meet his eyes with a soft smile. "But I think perhaps you're something better."

And then she pulled him into a kiss so warm that he almost forgot the fierce winds of Gagazet blowing down from the summit. He tightened his arms around her and willed her words to be true.

Ahem. I shall get the inane part out of the way first (without a thesaurus this time!): Squee. squeeeeeeeeeeeee. baralai/yunaomgtheirloveissosquee. Insert vast amounts of exclamation points here. Yey. You be shiny and l33t and awesome. squee. more exclamation points. I am probably bugging the crap out of you right now. XD

Actual review time! *g* I suck at this part. OK. Of course with a drabble it's always harder to squeeze the everything in, especially without practice, but all the same. First one: I like how Baralai's just staring from surprise. Which I can totally picture being his reaction to... many things, really. Deer-in-headlights. Aha! I'm in somewhat of a fangirlish mood, forgive my lack of thoughtful commentry. The second one was just made of cute, and I really like the whole Tidus bit... or rather, I like how even with someone else, Tidus is like there in Yuna's mind. XD Which rings true, since the poor girl's somewhat obsessed. I love them both! Maybe the second one a little more... the first seemed a little too abrupt for my tastes (from Yuna's side, oddly), but of course with that whole "100 word" barrier it can't be helped! And they're both stil adorable and cute and yay Baralai/Yuna. :D

Thanks so much for writing it~!!

Thanks for the review. And for the squee! I never mind a good heartfelt squee. ;)

Really glad you liked these. I am so fond of this pairing that the excuse to write it was very welcome -- I was actually sort of hoping you would ask for it! I also think the second one is a little stronger as a stand-alone drabble, but it cribs so heavily from "Can't Ask for More" that it felt like I was cheating. :) I wanted to post something truly original as well. The first one might be the nugget of a longer story someday, who knows.

XD I shall always ask for Baralai/Yuna, because no one will ever write it otherwise. That might have been a hint, right there...

And of course I liked them, sheesh. XD My only problem with the first was, as I mentioned, it did seem a little too abrupt. Looking down at your other comments I agree with the Tidus thing, how it would be nice to have an in-between between "forever pining" and "perfect ending," or rather the idea that I wish she's just get over him already... but she's very, very stuck on his memory, and so... um. So I can't quite believe I just devoted this much space to a drabble? XDD I do really like it, reallyreally. You know that. I'm just trying to be all "discuss-y" and such.

...And failing. To my corner I retreat!

I enjoy the way that while you did not ignore Tidus' presence in these short pieces you didn't make it overwhelming or depressing.

I like the way that Yuna compared herself to Spira. It reminded me of the boys' metaphors when they're speaking in Luca Stadium.

I love the hint that Baralai has been pursuing Yuna with no luck. I like the way he seems so grateful for the graceful way she gives in.

I pity Baralai a little for having to live up to Tidus - a sort of whirlwind love affair that took place suring very trying times. It's the sort of thing that makes people very close in a very short period of time. But what I love about this second drabble is the hint that such emotions can prove to be false, or at least not as strong as they appeared at first. It makes me wonder if Yuna and Tidus would really have worked out after all and that's interesting.

It makes me wonder if Yuna and Tidus would really have worked out after all and that's interesting.

It's something I've thought about too. And I've rarely seen anyone else look at it -- either there is no Tidus and Yuna moves on and/or carries a torch until she dies, or he's there and they're doing the happily-ever-after thing. I admit to being as guilty of that as everyone else. Do we just like happy endings, or is there some reason almost no one goes there? I wonder.

Anyway. Thank you. :) Baralai/Yuna is a favorite pairing of mine, another thing that I wish more people would write. I've always thought they would work well as a couple but have lots of interesting issues to explore. I'll probably spend more time on them eventually.
