Night shift

One of the downsides of my boss being out a lot this quarter and then taking a two-week vacation is that I have to open the library every day. Which means being in by 7:45 AM. Every day. As I am not a morning person, this is starting to take its toll. So this week, I'm switching shifts with the assistant and closing the library rather than opening. Ah, blessed sleep. The downside is that I have to work until 9:00, but there are worse things. I wouldn't want to do it all the time, but for a week? Not a problem. Plus, I bet I can get a lot of work done in the evenings, when there are fewer people around. Although I may also be bored and looking for distractions. So consider yourself warned. ;)

One thing I'm hoping to do is use the mornings to write. I've been doing a lot less writing lately, due to lack of time, various distractions, and a touch of writer's block, but I shook my brain a bit loose the other day and got more written (on my [livejournal.com profile] ff_exchange assignment, fortunately, since if I hadn't gotten an idea for that I'd be in big trouble!) than I had in ages. So I intend to take advantage of the free mornings and get back in the writing habit. Who knows, maybe it will stick.

You know what's good for writing habits? Drabble memes. XD

See, Ikon agress with me. XD

ZOMG YOU ARE GANGING UP ON ME...

;)

We'll see.

Hey, if it works, it works. XD

I always find changes to be distracting out of all proportion to their importance so I am sure you are having problems getting your ducks all lined up what with all the major upheavals lately. I think the reluctance to tolerate change is a token of the cat in some of us. ;)

I hope you can get your rhythm back soon. Drabbles ARE a good way of re-establishing the habit.

I have always hated change, especially major change and especially lots of it all at once, so you may have something there.

Is everyone conspiring to get me to take drabble requests? ;) I will think about it.

"Is everyone conspiring to get me to take drabble requests?"

I plead complete innocence. You know I am far too reticent and shy to ever ask anyone to write something for me. The last time I did that was when I was in grad school, rooming with a woman who aspired to be the next Flannery O'Conner.

Nope, all I meant was the same advice I used to give painters who had run dry. Paint a little something every day. Your Muse cannot inspire you if your hand is empty. At the very least, you will keep your hand in and hone your craft. ;)

One day I will be like, "So you like this character here, right?" and you will say "Yes, I do!" and I will write you a drabble and be like, "THIS IS FOR IKON, WHO DIDN'T ASK FOR IT REALLY EXCEPT I TRICKED HER INTO IT SO. ENJOY."

And it will be good.

Not for a single moment do I doubt it will be superb!!! My problem is that I do not have the temerity to expect anyone to do something just because I asked them to do so. I just don't have the nerve to take up another person's time. On well, nobody asks me to write for them either - probably because they know I do not have the skills or knowledge to venture out of my own comfortable niche. LOL

Hey, you wrote something I asked for once! (Nooj learning that Paine had survived the Mi'ihen incident.) And it was very much to my liking. ;)

TRUE STORY: for the first time since talking to you I had to use Dashboard's dictionary feature to look up a word. I'm totally doing better than I thought I would.

Arkansas education system, I'm sorry I doubted you!

As to asking for drabbles, well, look at drabble memes this way: if people post them they're actually ASKING for you to take up their time! So you don't have to ask for anything! They already did it for you. XD

I've done so many where people didn't get their drabbles, I've started to think of them as prompts rather than actually having to get them all done (even though, hey, that'd be good, too!)

Ah, defending drabbles. Who would have ever thought I'd be one to do that!

LOL Which word stumped you? I apologize; sometimes I just get going and don't notice what I'm doing. Slap me upside the head when I get all sesquipedalian. ;)

I love writing drabbles. They relax me when I am stuck in a big project and give me a place to put those little scences which pop up with no natural home. It is just that I am so narrowly focused that I have nothing to say outside my little plot of ground. They are also, like etudes for musicians, a good way of keeping one's skills up to snuff.

Re: I

It was "temerity" which means I learned a new word! Not that I'll use it, I'm all about plebe words like OMGZ and LOLZ these days.

Sesquipedalian sounds like you're calling yourself a squid. Or a salad. Or a squid salad. BUT I BET IT JUST MEANS WORDY.

Drabbles actually stress me out a lot? XD I remember when [livejournal.com profile] cupcakemonster was all like, "YOU HAVE MASTERED LONG WRITING, NOW MASTER SHORT!" and I struggled with them for a long time. I've faced facts that I'm a tl;dr writer but they're okay for a break.

Really all I'm doing is trying to get KJ to do a drabble meme so I can finally get that Gippal/Baralai drabble she doesn't really OWE me but I like reminding her because it's all part of my vicious plot to turn her into a slasher.

Drabbles = poetry (you mentioned musicians) and I SUCK hardcore at poetry, except for Donne. So maybe it's to be expected. :)

Right on with your guess! Although I like the idea of being a squid salad.

KJ a slasher? Oh the horror! She would write the most tender loving respectable slash in all ficdom. And nobody would get turned on which would make her feel like a failure and she would hang up her pen (keyboard) and go out in the garden to eat worms and die. You must not set this chain of events into play!! B/G is the territory of less noble souls - like you and me. ;)

This might be the wrong part of the post to react to, but: working to 9 PM is the *NIGHT* shift? *g* KJ LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT SWING AND GRAVE!
