Biggest surprise yet!

Rumsfeld is stepping down!!!!

I... I don't really know what to say. (Beyond "Woo hoo!" and "About freakin' time!") Talk about shock and awe.

Rumsfeld is stepping down!!!!

I guess the terrorists have already won. ;)

And Montana's been called for Tester!

I'm glad Bush didn't execute the following really sneaky plan: nominate Joe Lieberman for SecDef and let the Republican governor of CT appoint a replacement. Probably Joe wouldn't have gone for a 2-year job anyway.

Yay Montana!! Virginia is looking better, too, although I think we may be doomed to a recount there.

You have a strange obsession with Joe Lieberman. ;)

Any thoughts on your shiny new Democratic governor?

Hee! No, I have a strange obsession with perceived vulnerabilities. I hardly ever think about the guy, really.

*Hides Lieberman voodoo doll*

Yeah, maybe now I can get my father to stop referring to CO as "a red state". Now that Democrats have the legislature, the governor's mansion, one of the Senators, and 4 out of 7 Representatives. ;) Beauprez blew it - gave up his seat to run for governor, lost, and let a Democrat take the seat he vacated.

How does it feel to be represented by the Speaker of the House? Does it make up for the Governator? ;)

More than. Especially since the Governator corrected back to the middle since the special election and has been more tolerable. I'm not thrilled about having a Republican governor during the 2008 election but eh, it could be worse.

But yeah, Pelosi. I love her to pieces and have been watching her rising fortunes with much glee.

Completely off-topic, but I have to say it- I LIKE Jodi Rell... even if she is a republican :)

but too convenient a scapegoat...

I have been following two lines of thought on this developement. One: it is an effort to get the Democratic victories off the front page and top of the new broadcasts and Two: it just proves that Beloved Leader has failed at every single job he has had and has needed his daddy to rescue him (Gates is one of Poppy's men.)

I tried to listen to the press conference but the sound of that man-ape standing there in front of g-d and everybody, opening his mouth and letting all those lies flow out turned my stomach. How about that comment about how he 'tried to change the tone in Washington'? Ach. Calling your political adversaries traitors really sets a new tone, doesn't it?

I truly wish he and his revolting cabal would just quietly go away. I hear Paraguay is lovely this time of year. ;)

I think there is an option three: Bush knows that the House Dems are just salivating to get their hands on Rumsfeld and subject him to thousands of hours of brutal question, and he'd probably be forced out for his failures in the long run anyway. Might the resignation be a pre-emptive strike of a sort? Just a thought.

Since I am at work I was blissfully free from the press conference, but I got some choice tidbits reported to me. He is on the defensive for the first time ever and he is totally not going to be able to deal. I will enjoy watching the implosion.

Ted Koppel (on NPR) had a great line about Rumsfeld today, when the anchor asked him about how quickly Rumsfeld was tossed out(paraphrasing)- Not since Jonah was tossed off the ship (has a troublemaker been eliminated so quickly)

I'm so cynical that I'm just wondering what the next ploy is. Although getting Saddam sentenced two days before the election and Rumsfeld to play sacrificial goat right after is definitely a strange way of keeping the Democratic agenda out of the news.
