I couldn't resist this GIP, even though only [livejournal.com profile] lassarina will get it. ;)

I finished Swordspoint. It was good, but I think I like the sequel better. Although I guess it didn't help that I always knew who Alec was. If I hadn't known he was the duchess's grandson, and what happens with him and Richard years later, I wonder if it would have been more gripping?

The new Lord John book is next (Lord John and the Brotherhood of the Blade, Diana Gabaldon's companion series to her Outlander books) -- started it yesterday. Hey, check it out: canon slash!

I have just finished the latest Preston-Child opus. It continues their series on Special Agent Pendergast and is such a page-turner I finished the afternoon of the day I started it. Stories set in the restrictive confines of an ocean liner are nearly always compelling. Highly recommended.

I have never read any of their books. Do you have to read the whole series to understand this one, or does it stand alone?

Have you read any of the Lord John series?

It basically stands alone although there are some references to the earlier books. It has the damnedness motive I have read lately. There seems to be a fad for strange motivations both in fiction and in reality these days. Heh!

No, I have not read any of the Lord John series. How many are there?

This is the second. The first was "Lord John and the Private Matter". She's also written a couple of short stories about him. As a special bonus, I gather Jamie Fraser plays a role in this new one (although I haven't gotten to that part yet).

I only ever read a couple hundred pages of the first one, but all the same, I got the icon. :D

Heh, yeah, I guess it only takes limited exposure to Martin and the series to understand. ;) But I bet you haven't seen the increasingly irritated notes on his website ("as soon as it's done, I'll tell you. Now ZOMG stop bothering me!!11!" (paraphrased))

Gank away. Just make sure to give credit to the maker (who is not me -- the LJ username is in the keywords. If you check their journal, there's a whole post of awesome ASoIF quote icons).
