customer service
So today I went to Large Coffee Chain to get my breakfast. I ordered my latte and my scone, and then I opened my bag to see a gaping pocket where my wallet usually is. Immediately I realized that I'd left it behind -- I'd pulled out my credit card to order some slides from a website.
I looked up at the barista apologetically and handed back the scone. "Sorry, I left my wallet in the office."
He waved me off. "Pay for it tomorrow if you want."
And so it was that I got a free grande cinnamon latte and a pumpkin scone. Except not really, because I do have every intention of paying the next time I go, with a generous tip. If I'm going to get good service because they recognize me (and although I don't come in every day, they do see me a good 2-3 days each week), I'd better not repay that by stealing their stuff.

One of the things I *love* about my local EB...excuse me, it's Gamestapo now...is that the guys there know me and never try to sell me extra crap or persuade me to pre-order. They know I'm there to buy what I'm there to buy (and that I stop by and pick up unplanned things occasionally) and they also know that I already decided what I was pre-ordering and won't be talked into anything else. Plus they hide the FF games when I come in, and are like "Gosh, honey, I'm sorry, we didn't get any" and I'm like "That's too bad - especially since I can see them" "Damn! Foiled again. Here you go - you prepaid $10, right?" XD

Re: I
Given the way he worded it, I'm not convinced he actually does expect me to pay. Which is all the more reason to go through with doing so; much better for the karma.
It is nice to be recognized as a good and knowledgeable customer.
Isn't it? Especially the knowledgeable part -- nothing bugs me more than someone who has every reason to believe I know what I'm doing talking down to me.
