Burning questions of our time

Born out of many discussions T and I have had regarding how often it is reasonable to cook and/or go grocery shopping, I present: a poll!

[Poll #1075373]

Please feel free to pimp this, I would love to get a broad sampling. :) Thanks.

I tend to have absurd amounts of food in my house at any given time, so shopping is not usually the problem, the problem is actually getting home on any given night to cook. But I do usually make lunch and bring it with me rather than buying something while I am at work.

The other thing is that I have been a member of a CSA for the past two years, so over the summer I usually get fresh organic veggies (and fruit this year!) once a week, which forces me to cook (and invite people over) a bit more often that I probably would otherwise.

Wasn't quite sure how to answer the first one. We make one big grocery run at the end of the month (when I get paid) to get everything we need for the month. However, there are some things you can't stock up on, like bread and milk, which we make small grocery store runs to get on about a weekly basis (give or take). So I answered "A few times per month".

The reason I have to answer "something else" is that my behavior when alone is to make pasta almost every night because it is fast, easy, effective, and requires no conscious thought. This does not work for Steph, who needs constant variety, so the common pattern is that she will do actual cooking and I will chop up onions or play some other minor supporting role.

Erik does the foodshopping so I tried to answer them by thinking from his point of view. Once in a while he'll go to another place for things, it depends

We went once a week when the closest store was driving distance away, but now there's a good grocery store 2 blocks away, so we go more often, and buy fresher food. How often we eat dinner at home varies depending on our work schedules, because sometimes one or both of us works late, so we eat at work, or get takeout from the tasty taqueria down the street. :)

I answered "something else" on the store question because we hit the farmer's market once a week and the co-op once a week. :)

We cook dinner pretty much every night... sometimes I plan leftovers (like tonight I pulled a roast out of the freezer that we cooked a couple of weeks ago) and sometimes we very off the meal plan when I'm too tired to make anything but tacos, but generally, we're cooking something every night of the week. We went out with some friends from out of state a couple weeks ago, and for our anniversary last month. We do have a frozen pizza incident every couple of months. :)

My goal is to go to the grocery store once a week and Costco once every two weeks, but we inevitably end up needing something I forgot, or wanting something that works best purchased day-of, during the week and making another run.

I do most of my shopping at a local "gourmet grocery" (though they have a lot of normal food too, which is why I like them) and Costco, but there is a small handful of items we are brand-loyal to that we have to get at a Safeway.

It's not "real" cooking, but I always have pasta and sauce on hand, as well as canned soup and such for the days when I just can't face the notion of even that much cooking.

Also I love to really cook :)

I actually do a combination. I'll shop for meats and dry goods (pasta, coffee, creamer, sugar, etc.) at Sam's Club, and then buy the produce and bread at the local grocery store. I usually manage to keep my grocery budget around $150 per month for myself and a husband, and the occasional dinner guest.

I freeze all the meat in normal portions, by putting it in little freezer baggies, and pull one out a day to thaw for dinner.

Whether or not we go out to eat depends on whether I'm running out of stuff to cook with the meat. :>
