Birthday wrap-up

I've been meaning to post about all the good things that happened on Wednesday, but I keep getting distracted. So buckling down to sum up.

First of all, many many thanks for all the good wishes!! I tried to get you all personally, but I know I may have missed some; rest assured I saw them all, and appreciate them muchly. :)

The librarians informed me on Tuesday that they were taking me to lunch, that they had already made reservations, and that they'd thought about surprising me but decided they'd better tell me, so that I wouldn't schedule a meeting or something. But the fun actually started in the morning, with a visit to the big cats. This time I got to see all three cats: the cheetah, the lynx, and a serval. Such beautiful creatures. Followed by lunch, at The Slanted Door, a restaurant I've always really liked. We stuffed ourselves there, and then went back to the office, where they presented me with a cake. Candles and all! They even got my name on it, in frosting! Of course, we were way too full for cake at that point, so we had to hold off a couple hours, to eat it later. Pretty tasty, once I finally had room for a slice.

Then I got home to discover the first disc of Avatar Book 2 waiting for me. I would probably have inhaled it, but T had a work project, so we only got to watch the first episode. But still, very exciting. Man, that's a good show. So instead I played more Phoenix Wright, also a good thing, even if I'm still only on the third episode of the first game.

So overall one of my more memorable and fun birthdays. Yay.

I missed wishing you a happy birthday! D: I'm so sorry. Sounds like it was a good one — happy belated! :)

And wait, you're watching Avatar now?? Oh happiness, oh joy! Its awesomeness is almost beyond my comprehension. :DDD So you're just starting season 2 for the first time?

Thanks!! Nothing wrong with belated. ;)

We watched the first season of Avatar a couple of months ago, but for various reasons just got our hands on the second. Really looking forward to watching the rest. I'd probably inhale the whole thing in a couple of weekends, but T pushes for a more moderate approach, which is funny, because he's the one who saves up episodes of BSG on the TiVo and then watches six at a time. ;) Then again, since season 3 is still airing, maybe there's no real point in rushing it. We'll see how it goes.

It is, indeed, a very awesome show.

You are in for a treat. Much as I love season one, the second season is where it really starts to go off the hook. Great new characters you wonder how you made it through the first season without, and a plot that's a lot more cohesive and a little bit darker. Enjoy!

They are still in the middle of broadcasting season three, yes — in fact they've just taken a several-month hiatus in the middle of the season, and no indication when it will start airing again. >:( But the third is the last season of the original show — though Mike and Bryan say they will do other things in this universe. And of course there are the live action movies to look forward to.

I have been staying away from the fandom for fear of spoilers, so I hadn't heard about the live action movies, etc., and I'm surprised there are only three seasons -- no Book 4: Air?

Glad to hear it only gets better. :)

Yeah, staying away from fandom for fear of spoilers is a good idea. Staying away from fandom because it's goddamn crazy is another good idea. It's funny because in Harry Potter I was deeply invested in and partisan in the ship wars, but not in Avatar. In Avatar the shipping craziness that dominates the fandom is just tedious to me, and everyone deeply into it just seems to be missing the whole point of the show. Which is probably what us HP shippers looked like to everyone else!

But in Avatar as in HP, I really love all of the characters, and it just makes me sad when fandom demonizes one character or another for the sake of their ship. Avatar fandom is a bit younger than HP fandom I would say; it doesn't seem to have the prominent group of people our age.

But yeah, no Book 4: Air. Aang already knows that one, I guess. There will be a trilogy of live-action movies based on the three seasons, set to be written, produced and directed by M. Night Shyamalan, supposedly filming this summer (but who knows). I'm cautiously optimistic but you never know when an adaptation is just going to stink, so....

I just realized I have given you three straight Fire Nation icons. Flameo!

Sounds like a great day! I'm glad you had such a wonderful time! My husband watches Avatar, and if I'm in the room I catch it with him. It is such a great, funny show.
