Tethered

My MacBook has been having problems for awhile, mostly in that it often freezes when I try to put it to sleep. It's one of those intermittent things, where usually it's fine, but then it'll happen three times in one day, and then not again for a month. The warranty expires next month, so I decided it was high time to get it looked at. Yesterday, I took it to the Apple Store and spent some time with a Genius. He poked at it, tried several times to replicate the problem and failed, decided it was probably a software glitch, and sent me home with instructions on how to reinstall the operating system and a few other things to fix up. It took forever, with the time it takes to install an OS and then download a year's worth of updates, but I had hope that it would be worth it.

Then, this morning as I was heading off to work, it froze while I was putting it to sleep.

So I packed it up, took it with me to work, and made another Genius Bar appointment for this evening. And this time they asked me to leave it there for diagnosis, to see if it is indeed a hardware issue. So I'm now separated from my happy shiny laptop. I dragged the Mini out of storage, so I'm still Mac enabled, but it's not the same. I hope it's fixed soon, not least because I'm going to be in San Diego all of next week, and it would be very sad to travel without it. They promised they wouldn't start repairs unless they could be finished by Sunday (there's a couple of weeks left on the warranty when I get back), but it's still a risk. So we'll see.

In other news, I finished PuzzleQuest and am on the last case in Phoenix Wright. I went to EB Games while I was out, but they didn't have PW2, not even used. Too bad; I can still order it, I'm sure, but I was hoping to have it for next week. I did pick up Revenent Wings, though. I don't know how I'll feel about real-time strategy, but I figure I should at least give it a shot.

So, that's me right now. How are you?

I'm so sorry you are separated from your baby D:. I hope it comes back soon!

So it sounds like you would recommend Phoenix Wright? Could you say a little something about it? (Maybe you did in a post I missed....) It seems to be quite popular in the pan-fandom online universe.

I have Puzzle Quest but I am actually playing that least of the DS games I have (and none am I playing that often).... I'm also doing the Professor Layton game and the Zelda game, Phantom Hourglass, both of which are a lot of fun.

How goes the Avatar viewing? What ep are you up to?

I've mentioned PW offhand a couple of times but not really gone in-depth with my reactions. I'm finding it pretty enjoyable, enough so that I want to continue with the series. It's a puzzle game, basically, sort of like a guided "Choose Your Own Adventure" with legal cases. There are some great characters. The gameplay gets a little irritating sometimes -- although I haven't lost a case yet, it's really easy to get stuck, and I've spent a little more time than I would prefer running around in circles. But I'd recommend giving it a try.

T and I both got terribly addicted to PuzzleQuest. It's one of those games that's easy to pick up and play for a little while, and then you look up and an hour has gone by.

We've watched the first disc of Season 2 of Avatar. The next disc is on its way and I hope it arrives soon!!

I thought I replied to this this morning, but I think my computer must have hiccuped.

Thanks for the comments on PW... I'll probably check it out at some point.

I'm always losing at Puzzle Quest. The worst is when there are no moves left and I get a new screen and my opponent gets to move first and racks up like ten moves in a row and squishes me. >:(

OK, so Avatar, you've seen through ep 2.05 Avatar Day then? I actually think the very next episode is where it goes from great to really really great. Don't get me wrong, I like all of it but sometimes there are episodes that feel like filler — The Swamp kind of comes to mind. But starting with episode 6, pretty much every episode is a necessary part of the overall plot and it just gets taken up a notch.

You're also about to meet an extremely important character. But you've already met Azula, Mai and Ty Lee, who are so indispensable to me I really feel their absence when I rewatch season 1. I get this feeling someone told them "Your show is great, but four out of five main characters are boys!" and they really fixed that in the second season.

There are rumors the latter half of season three will start airing next month, so you have enough time to catch up (and post about it with me)!

But then how will I be able to watch the first half of season 3? Is it out on DVD already?

"The Swamp" was totally a filler episode. "Avatar Day" more than made up for it though. And yes, that's the last episode I've seen. I agree with you about the Fire Girl trio adding a much needed dimension to the story, although I wonder if Azula will get wearying. Zuko is a nice complex antagonist, so I hope Azula has some of the same layers.

Also, is it just me, or should lightning be a special case of air rather than of fire?

I believe the first half of S3 is already out on DVD, yes. (We are actually in the middle of a frustrating several-month hiatus, so they've had some time to get them out.) You have other options, too. Alex and I actually watched by downloading episodes from the iTunes store — we have a Mac mini hooked up to our TV. So that was nice in terms of instant gratification. :) And also, of course, they are all available out on the internet in less than legal ways, as well. (The last two eps have only aired in Canada for some reason, which means for us they are so far only available in that way.)

Azula is basically the anti-Zuko, so she's not precisely "deep" in the same way he is, in the sense that he suffers from all sorts of conflicts and she doesn't suffer from any. But I certainly have never gotten tired of her; she's a lot more interesting and colorful than Zhao was, anyway. And it's kind of nice to have a villain who's actually pretty smart and can be seen learning from her mistakes!

Also, is it just me, or should lightning be a special case of air rather than of fire?

Yeah, and if comets are big balls of ice, why should they help firebenders? ;)
