Very important fashion question

Last week, I acquired a pair of Mary Janes for the first time in... as long as I can remember. (They're Clark's and will be quite comfy, I think, once I break them in.) In fact, I don't remember the last time I bought shoes that weren't sandals, sneakers, or boots.

Because I dislike wearing socks, naturally my first question, as with any shoe, was "do I have to wear socks with that?" They fit fine either way, but I don't know whether I'm committing a terrible fashion faux pas. So I turn to you for help.

(ETA: Because a couple of people have asked... the shoes are black.)

I actually have no idea what the fashion rules are for Mary Janes, sorry!

I have these Mary Janes http://www.landsend.com/pp/MaryJaneTrekkerShoes~182602_253.html?bcc=y&action=order_more&sku_0=::PEU&CM_MERCH=IDX_00009__0000000917&origin=index which I do not wear with socks, but they are really summer shoes.

Since I almost never wear skirts (at least ones above my ankles), I wear pants hose with my Mary Janes. I prefer the ivory coloured ones because they contrast nicely with the shoes.

I cannot believe I am expressing an opinion on style. Really, I am the most disassembled dresser in the world.

I am probably the last person whose fashion advice you want to take, but I would say no-socks is perfectly fine! As for the color, I am REALLY bad at that. Just make sure you don't look like Michael Jackson (a la super black shoes and super white socks... with floods) and I figure you're fine. XD

Given that they are black shoes, black socks is fine. With MJs, I would hesitate to wear contrasting color socks, unless it was the intended fashion statement. I think white would be an always no, unless you were Steven Page and your girlfriend was dressing you.

I've sort of resisted owning Mary Janes specifically because all my socks are black and I feel like the point of the little open part is to show some kind of contrast. I actually love the way they look without socks, but my feet are... umm... stanky... so that's not a great option for me; I'd have to do those little footy things that aren't supposed to show but stick out anyway and make young women look like grannies.

Honestly, I like how they look better without socks, but if you do have to wear socks I generally do tend towards pantyhose or knee highs.

the biggest problem with wearing them without socks- or with nylons, is that they will get stinky :P
