Associations meme

Association Meme, via [livejournal.com profile] wildejoy: Comment to this post and I will give you 5 subjects/things I associate you with. Then post this in your LJ and elaborate on the subjects given.

My responses to [livejournal.com profile] wildejoy's associations with me:

1. Nooj/Paine
I have discussed this pairing, my OTP not only of FFX/X-2 but of all Final Fantasy and of fandom as a whole, often and at length. I love writing about them, I love exchanging meta about them, I love trying to convince people to board the ship with me, and I love that I have won a handful of converts. Sometimes I wonder if I'm going to run out of avenues to explore, but then another idea comes, and I'm off again.

2. Politics
I've been interested in politics pretty much as long as I can remember. My parents, especially my dad, are both liberal Democrats who enjoy discussing political issues, so I come by it naturally. If I don't know what's going on in the political realm, I feel very out of touch with the world. Some would say that it doesn't really matter, but I disagree: what happens in Washington, our statehouses, and at the local level can have a profound effect on people everywhere. I defy anyone to look at the last eight years and claim that who is president doesn't matter.

3. Libraries
I think it's tragic that, right now, when people are falling on hard economic times and need the resources that libraries can provide more than ever -- education, entertainment, free Internet access, help finding jobs -- public libraries are some of the greatest victims of government budget cuts. In the Internet age, the resulting explosion of information makes libraries and librarians more relevant, not less, and more people need to recognize that (including, sadly, some librarians).

4. Writing
I wrote for fun when I was a kid, then gave it up as a teenager, pretty much completely. And yet, somewhere in the back of my head, I still considered myself a writer. I think I always knew I would come back to it someday, but I would never have expected fandom to be the conduit. And yet it has been. From the time I posted my first fic in 2005 through 2007, I experienced a burst of creativity that was more satisfying than maybe anything else in my life ever. I've slowed down since, but I don't see myself ever giving it up completely again.

5. Feminism
Earlier today, I was catching up on [livejournal.com profile] fanficrants. There was a post where a ranter called out an unambiguously sexist statement, and then disclaimed it with "and I'm not even a feminist".* And it makes me sad that, after all this time, people still feel the need to draw a distinction between being feminist, and being against sexism. I've called myself a feminist with pride since college at least -- probably I fit the definition of "feminist" before that, but it was reading Backlash during my senior year that really opened my eyes to just how thoroughly sexism permeates our world, and to how important it is to reclaim feminism from those who would discredit it.

*This story has a happy ending. Some commenters on the post made just this point, and the ranter edited her post to embrace feminism rather than avoiding it. And this is how we empty the ocean, one teaspoon at a time.

Oddly enough, this group of five topics gives an excellent picture of you as I know you. It identifies your major influences and interests and makes a clear three-dimensional image of a thoughtful woman. [livejournal.com profile] wildejoy understands you.

I agree, it is a good selection of me, as least as I present myself here -- I don't tell you guys *everything*, after all. ;) The only major influence missing is music, and that's not something I post about much.

BTW, if you are inclined to participate, the associations I would choose are Nooj, language, politics, Richard III, and writing, but I leave it up to you. ;)

2. Yeah, a libdem that voted for Nixon. ;)
3. I do keep making this point, for what it's worth. When I'm not too busy pulling my hair out over kicking everyone out of the library instead of, you know, actually being a library.

But yeah, I'm trying to rediscover my inner livejournaler. So hit me. (In the card playing sense. You know.)
