It looks like the name currently in vogue for the condition is Maroteaux-Lamy syndrome, also known as Mucopolysaccharidosis VI. I can't find any evidence linking the disorder to impotence, either online or in any of my medical dictionaries. Literary license in action, I suppose.

And did you know that petit Henri's pere had the habit of riding his favourite mare down to the local pub (or whatever they are called in France) and milking her there to concoct his drink? I think it was brandy and mare's milk. Ugh!

Unfortunately, I can't help you with the Scots problem. Occupational hazard of reading the books -- it was the same for me. It will pass with time. Or it should, anyway. ;) It's so pervasive that I always had to remind myself to hear Claire's voice in an English accent rather than Scots!
