The Internet saves the day

This may be the most amazing group effort, not to mention the best example of the kindness of strangers, that I've ever seen: Metafilter bands together to help two women escape a dodgy situation. (Note: even knowing that the story has a happy ending, the thread has some pretty disturbing talk about human trafficking. Be prepared.)

If anyone ever tries to tell you that the Internet and social media are useless wastes of time, and/or needs to rekindle some faith in the goodness of humanity, just point them at that thread. Wow.

That seriously made me tear up. Not least of which the fact that apparently there are people legitimately on the State Dept's human trafficking task force who actually understand social media and use it to prevent this stuff.

internet, for as many times as you destroy my faith in humanity, sometimes, just sometimes, you are a fucking amazing reminder of how awesome we can be.

That was incredible. It's amazing what a random act of kindness of capable of becoming.
